Question Health Insurance: HMO vs PPO?

I get to the US in 2 weeks on an intracompany transfer (L-1A). On my first day in the new office I have to choose between various health plans.

Now, I understand the basics of HMO (you're limited to treatment within the insurer's network) and PPO (you can choose a physician/specialist), but what are the differences in practical terms. Any big reasons to choose one over the other?

Cheers,

Pat
