Gas as in Natural Gas.

Those sort of jobs here are very hard to get.

I know an English guy here who is self employed. Think his Missus has a County job with health insurance.

Hello,
yes, I have a qualification for domestic gas work. Cookers, gas fires, water heaters, boilers ( furnaces in the US I think !! )
However, I realise that most work in CA will be HVAC. I have done it but don't have the qualification. I currently work in a hospital as a maintenance engineer.I do plumbing, joinery, electrics etc etc.
Do you think that that would be a better job to look for?

I know that you need a license in CA to install anything that is domestic with gas and the fine for doing so without the license is nasty SO I hear, of course there are folk that do it.

This worth a read http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos193.htm

There is some chance that the US will move towards some kind of single-payer system whereby the government helps/provides insurance to those that cannot afford it.

My view is that there is more chance of progress in this area right now than there has been since I moved here. I always said it would take the bankruptcy of a major US company like GM for this country to releaize what a terrible idea - for both employers and employees - it is tieing healthcare to employment. Well, GM is in chapter 11. Of course, the vested interests and their lobbying $$$ are going to be out there screaming "socialism" from the rooftops, so I wouldn't exactly be banking on change happening...

That's pretty cheap for an ER visit.
