I must admit to being amused at people worrying about premium gas, when it's now proportionately cheaper than ever.:sneaky::huh:

Doesn't bother me....I just think how much it would cost if I was back in the UK.

Peak oil - learn it, love it, live it. gasoline is on a general uphill trajectory.

On my way to work yesterday morning my local station was $3.06, $3.16 and $3.26. Last night on my way home it had dropped to $3.03, $3.13 and $3.23. A friend of mine in GA paid $3.24 for regular yesterday morning but by last night the same station was selling regular for $3.11.

Has the rising price had any effect on your travel habits yet? I have been a little more consious about just going to the mall etc without any really good reason.

Ash :)

Here its between $3.02...and $3.09...don't think its changed our habits much...in fact after 7 years of having small cars...we just got a V8 SUV...seeing as most days it only does 2 miles I can't say it'll break the bank....

The only comparison measure (between UK/US prices) that should be used is the actual cost in real terms of driving your vehicle 1 mile.

I calculated my UK costs on my Grand Voyager (based on avg 40mpg or 8.8 miles per litre fuel @94.9p per litre and 12000 miles per year) as:

10.7 pence per mile for petrol (94.9 / 8.8)
3.0 pence per mile for insurance (£360 / 12000 miles)
1.54 pence per mile for road tax and mot (185 /12000)

which is 15.25p per mile give or take.

If I do the same calculations with my US truck @18mpg or 4.76 miles per litre based on current US gas prices - Call it $3.50 as a mean or 92.5c per litre, and assuming 12000 miles per year I get:

19.45c per mile for petrol (92.5 / 4.76)
16.1c per mile for insurance ($2000 / 12000 miles)

which is 35.5c per mile actual costs

That doesnt take into consideration the much higher servicing costs in the US either.

EVEN IF you used the exchange rate myth at its best of 2:1 UK motoring is cheaper now. Fact. Sorry if that hurts....Oh and I have the option of walking more here too.

Don't those Grand Voyagers cost twice as much in the UK?

Nope. I got mine (2 years old, top of the range Limited XS with all the extras) for £12500.

I've just checked Chrysler UK and USA and the new one in the UK is about £29,000 and in the US (called a Town and Country now) its $38,000

Chrysler are hitting the UK/EU market big time it seems now, theres a Chrysler garage everywhere and loads of what used to be US only vehicles on the roads...I see voyagers, jeeps and dodge rams and crossfires and 300c's all over the place

Re: Gas/Petrol

I can't believe its a holiday weekend and our gas is still cheaper than a lot of places...most of the time it jumps 20/40 cents this time of year...

Shell was selling at $3.38...but at C farms across the road its $3.09...the garage owned by a Russian family is still selling at $3.02...and the Brazilians are at $3.08...I can't believe people still fill up at the shell...when there is such a big price difference...

Has anyone noticed stations dropping CITGO in favor of another brand of gas? It's happened to few around here. I'm wondering if it's because of Chavez or just normal business decisions.

Another point:

When we left the UK in 2004 petrol was bout 80p per litre...today it's 94.9, which is about 18% increase in 3 years.
When we arrived in the US in 2004 Gas was about $1.10 per gallon...now it's $3.10 (ish) where we lived...thats a 180% increase over the same time period....Can you say Holy Gas Price Rises Batman?

Put it all another way....it cost me £54 to fill my Voyager up here from empty, from which I got about 400 miles. It used to cost me $100 to fill my truck up from empty in the US from which I got about 220 miles.

The general subject of cheaper in the US/UK is often up for discussion here........trouble is, its all very subjective to the individual's desired standard of living.......innit?

Gas/Petrol costs (along with the myriad of other car "maint." costs) merely make up one of many variables all summing up to one half of an equation........(Maths geeks wide awake now and normal people rapidly zoning out.........)

Basically......you may be right in general, you very probably are right in particular ;).....but until some bright economics spark comes up with a means of accurately comparing the costs of living UK/US.......the cost of running a car is just a small part of the "big picture".
