Furniture

Re: Furniture
If you're near any of these: http://www.livingspaces.com/ we bought everything we needed in one hit and had it delivered the day we moved into the apartment. They had a huge range of furniture.
Go after Christmas, I got $400 off my coffee table because they couldn't be bothered to clean the glitter out after decorating it for Christmas. Then again, 3 years later, I still haven't got it all out.

Well yes, they're not cheap, but they are fantastic quality
You have to check the local stores out if you have one as they do have a good range of stuff and usually pretty good clearance sales now and again...but yeah, pricey
Best bet for anything decent is still a local indie furniture place...or looking for cheap, get something commissioned at a local technical school? I know the vocational highschool next town over has carpenter students working on furniture for people for a little over cost, to partially fund some of the classes, so that might be worth a look?

Re: Furniture
And thinking about it, probably a lot of schools teaching set creation and the like, who might be another option?

Re: Furniture
Sorry - can't really help - we struggle on furniture as well. Every time I see something I like in someones house, it turns out they bought it overseas and shipped it with them!!!
We bought a load of cheap crap when we got here because we were busy with babies, new business, housebuying etc etc., intending to trade it out for decent stuff once we'd settled in. 10 years on, we still have most of the cheap crap because we can't find anything we like to replace it! I guess putting a positive spin on it, it may have been cheap, but can't have been so crappy to have survived this long!

You should try Russells in Santa Clara or Connley's in Fremont. Generally they carry lighter colored furniture.
I've also ordered furniture through discount catalog stores before the internet but I don't know if they exist anymore.

Re: Furniture
Several friends of mine really like Room & Board in San Francisco - I have not shopped there because it isn't really convenient for me but it might give you some ideas - looks fairly expensive though.
I mostly find stuff through small local furniture stores that happen to have things that match my taste - I like a lot of the MariaYee designs although I don't think that is quite what you are looking for.
Also take a look at Simply Amish - lots of designs available in different finishes and, from what I have seen, very solid good quality stuff.

Have a look here: http://www.homesteadfurnitureonline....g_servers.html
Browse the rest of the site too. I can vouch for the quality of the product. Solid wood, they will use whatever wood you specify... maple, hickory, cherry, red oak, QSWO... they will finish it however you like.
Prices are not cheap, but are fair considering the quality. They ship all over the world.

Re: Furniture
We have this locally http://www.barewoodoutlet.com/ You can choose your piece and varnish or whatever to your taste. Maybe something similar where you are?

Re: Furniture
We bought something very similar to your desired piece from Pottery Barn. However in dark walnut, not oak. Oak furniture is bountiful in the northeast...but I see little of it here.
I'm surprised you find crate and barrel pricey as it's cheaper than PB, West Elm or Ethan Allen. We bought a lot from CB. Our beds we bought out of a catalog at a local furniture place. Tons of places will help with ordering.

Re: Furniture
Bloody typical. Handmade from reclaimed wood in Great Britain. I could have collected the wood and got my carpenter Dad to make it for me

Re: Furniture
Another vote for Scandinavian Designs here. So far we've bought a sofa, a loveseat, a sectional, coffee table and matching end table, room divider and a full set of bedroom furniture from them. Great service and no problems at all. Also like Crate and Barrel and have bought a few things from them, though not any major pieces of furniture.
I've looked in Room & Board, West Elm and Arhaus and seen a few nice bits but nothing I've liked enough to buy.
