I'd say "weird stuff" is a reason not to go to H&R Block but rather a reason to find a proper CPA! The friendly guy/ess who does your taxes at H&R has been trained to use the software and is not a tax accountant. If you've got straightforward stuff, s/he'll do just fine, just as fine indeed as the software you can buy and use on your PC for a cheaper price. But the complex stuff such as dual taxation treaties it does not do!

I was going to say the same thing; they did my dual state return fine, but I don't have a house, I'm not self-employed etc... so it's probably not that complicated.

Yeah, it's the insurance part that I like. Plus I bet a CPA is probably much more expensive than H&R Block & that's about the max I'm willing to pay. It's worked great for us so far, so I'm not gonna try to fix something that isn't broken. Thanx for the info though!

Does anyone do their own tax returns?! We did ours last year and it was fine. This year we moved states halfway through the year, and both of us changed jobs. I might get help with my filing too.

My OH does our taxes. I have no clue. He says it's really straightforward.

I go to a CPA. Last year I paid $125. Do not think I will be changing my habit this year.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I thought that once you had a SSN that you no longer need to use your TIN? I know I only use my SSN now.

Yes, I'm sure that's true, but I only got my SSN a few months ago, so I have used my TIN within this year. Next year I'm sure it won't be a problem.

I feel an instant rebate rip-off coming on here! Don't do it!

What put me off ever doing my own taxes is last year one of the news channels got a couple to fill out there own tax returns and then they got H & R to do it and the couple were a $1000 off on their return.

We paid an accountant last year which was easy for us as we have UK property, she got us a huge rebate. But we paid her $250 which now seems expensive after reading some of these posts.
