Default Filing State Tax Return with Pending ITINs

My husband made the SPT (by 1 day!) for 2015. Our accountants filed for an extension until 10/16 which was granted. He is filing Married Jointly and we have 3 dependants that need ITINs. We had to make an appointment and present them and their passports at a Tax Center to file the W7s. Finally got an appointment for this past week and the referral return has been filed. Advised that the numbers (if granted) will take 7-10 weeks.

Does anyone know if the State return can be filed before the ITINs come through? The advisor at the IRS centre told us to contact the state (Il) to see if we can file now. I've had no luck speaking to anyone at the State.

CookCounty or any other tax experts, any advice?

We filed our 2015 tax returns (federal, state and local) in PA with pending ITINS for me and the q boys. Our tax preparer just wrote "applied for" in the ssn boxes.

Thanks Lizzyq. As luck would have it, I finally got an email response from the State confirming that as long as the Federal return had been submitted, we can file the State one with pending ITINs.

I'll send it certified mail today. I've already spent the refunds in my head

Just to bore you but if this is your first year in the US you're supposed to file dual-status as explained in IRS publication 519. Unless you arrived on January 1st or you're okay with being subject to US taxes for the whole year.

we did the pending ITIN thing back in2008. they rejected the applications but took the returns and sent us a provisional result ignoring the kids details. so we sent the apps in again, and they rejected again. (and when i said WE sent it - the company provided high falutin fancy lawyer did). so at that stage I just took it into my own hands, and sent it what I thought was required and lo and behold they accepted them and then backdated the itins to the return and we gt our expected refund.
