Question Filing joint tax return?!

Hi,

My hubby will be starting work in the US in Oct on a H1B visa and I will be joining him on a H4 visa. As he is working he gets a SS number, I assume I won't as I am not allowed to work?! When it comes to filing his US tax return can he file 'jointly' as he will then pay less tax (hopefully!) due to having myself and 3 children as dependents OR will he have to file singularly as only he has (will have!) a SSN?

I have only just got used to self-assesments!!! :P Now we have to try and understand how another country does it!

TIA

Vicki

I think you and the kids should be able to get ITINs which are essentially tax id numbers for people who are not allowed SSNs. Form W7 springs to mind.
