Happens to the best of us. Grin and bear it and try, try again. You don't have to use the office in Manhattan you know. Go to Westchester or Queens or wherever if it is easier for ya.

I do K turns nearly everyday. Takes less than 20 seconds to complete usually. I applaud your cautionary behavior. BTW 3 mins is about the average length of the test.

He could barely conceal his delight when saying "you're not in England now". He made me drive straight back to the start and failed me. I must have been in the car for 3 mins max.

Annoyed the hell out of me. I can drive well but was being cautious, as I was advised to do. Now I must apply for a new learner permit as it was about to expire, which means spending a day at Herald Square.

Then I guess I was really bad back when I was 17 and took the road test. I passed it the second time around though.

But remember that back then it was unpaved roads, standard shifts, and we had to dodge the dinosaurs.

I don't even know what a three point turn is. I think you're making all of this up.

That's because you're a woman-type and therefore cannot drive, by definition.
Now get back in the kitchen and make me a sammich.

I would but I'm too directionally challenged to find the kitchen so I think I'll just lie here on the floor and cry.

Were you also powering the stone-wheeled car by running on the road?

Don't worry about it. I had to do it for my test. That is probably the only time I have ever done the manuver in the last 14 years. It's a bit pointless, IMO.

Sounds awful. I am opposed to reversing in a straight line as well ... that is just wrong.

hubby failed 1st time for not following instructions. He had been asked to go straight on, there were 2 lanes and a car in front indicated out of the left hand turn lane to also go straight on, so he moved over to let the other car change lanes. He was told he wasn't asked to change lanes so he had failed. He still went straight on though

I passed 1st time though, oh the fun I had....

You clearly haven't seen the Erie PA test centre. Unpaved roads and dinosaurs still abound!

Test must have taken all of 3 minutes on the road / tracks. Trickiest bit was the reverse (parallel) park, the only "must do" manoeuvre. The cones were laid out around a space far smaller than any US parking space I have seen before or since. Managed to squeeze the blighter into it though, and though it was at an angle I wouldn't call "parked" it was in the box, so good enough for the test.

I got a minor fault during my US driving test last year because when I was asked to reverse in a straight line I kept looking all around me as well as behind to make sure there were no oncoming cars or pedestrians, as per UK regulations. Apparently in the US you're ONLY supposed to look behind you (or in the direction you're travelling), so I got a minor. Pissed me right off!
