Come on guys, if you have to resurrect 2 year old threads, at least have the decency to make it a good one!

Any people who have joined since this thread was started (e.g. myself) are not going to bother reading through 6 pages in order to find out what the heck you are going on about.

In other words, a better first post might have been "Hello, I'm new here. Please be gentle with me."

Each to their own. Welcome to the forum anyhow.
eh heh heh, whoops sorry about that
I actually found the thread through a google search, and didn't even see the date of the original post until after

sorry about all the ranting I did, it's just the excess left over from the speech I did today somewhere else

anyway, I want to see if I can resurrect a mostly dead thread with this
really wierd question.

If someone immigrated to America (from anywhere) and became a legal resident alien, what criteria should be used to distinguish between their rights and responsibilities vs the rights and responsibilities of someone who is already a U.S citizen?

sorry if that's kinda wierd, but I've been doing research for a pet project on the constitution.

heh, by the time I actually remember to check this thread in like 5 minutes, I bet at least 2 people will have posted (don't know why I added that comment, but it just felt like it belonged).

There's a difference between a legal resident alien and a citizen, although both are required to register for selective service, within the age constraints, which I can't remember but I'm sure someone will tell you

The UK doesn't have a written constitution as such. Does the Magna Carta count?

That was the first written constitition so I am led to believe.
Unless you include the Ten Commandments
I am also sure that we do have a more modern written constitution and a bill of rights (type thingy).

Short reply to that: Constitutional guarantees apply to everyone in the United States, legal alien, citizen and illegal immigrant alike. Differences being that only citizens have the right to vote (though states can determine otherwise, they decide who vote) and of course, anyone except citizens can be kicked out. Oh and I think there's something in there about non-immigrants not being able to own guns or something.
And with regards to Equal protection and the 14th amend. and how it applies to the states; its been determined that immigrants are a 'protected class' on the same level basically as discrimination against african-americans. There's some case about that.....New York v. some hispanic guy
And thats my constitutional law in a nutshell! I went through 2 semesters of con law, and this is what I got out of it. Who wants to hire me?
