Driving license transfer Canada to US / I-131 approved
I am a new GC resident in NY; while waiting for SSN I tried to transfer
the driving license from Canada to NY, which the local regulations (NY)
say must be done in 30 days. However, the car being insured in Canada,
the insurance of the car would expire as soon as I transfer the
license, so I decided not to transfer lincese until resolve the car
first.
On the other hand, if I transfer the car, I need to import the car into
NY at the POE, and then I need to insure it (in NY) and plate it (and
then I can change the license). Problem is, it takes (at least) 30 days
to plate an "imported" car.
It seems that I will be late anyway with the 30 days requirement, what
would be the consequences though? My interpretation is that as long as
I do not drive in NY I am fine (I applied and obtained a resident card
instead, as proof of residency is more important in my situation); the
driving licensing office mentioned that the problem I might have is if
I am being stopped by police and found with residency in NY but driving
license in Canada, but they will not "charge" me if I register late.
Considering that I applied for I-131 "returning resident permit", would
there be any consequences if I drive the Canadian plated car at the POE
with the Returning Residence Permit - and show the ID card for NY?
Another option would be to buy a new car in NY and insure it there,
then change the license, but that leaves my Canadian car uninsured,
hence I will not be able to move around while on the I-131 extension
(once I transfer the license to USA, no insureance in Canada(. Any
experiences for USA PR driving Canadian-plated cars in USA with
approved I-131 (returning resident permit)? I would also appreciate if
anyone knows how I can call a POE, and if they would answer such
questions.
Any help greatly appreciated.
