Default Driver's License? SSnumber? Car license plates/Insurance?

Hello everyone. Well, I'm very glad to say that we've made it through the worst part
of the K1 Visa process successfully so far. I've received my Visa from Montreal. I
had a 9:30 appointment and we were out of the building by 10:45! We were VERY happy
considering some of the horror stories we've read about here. First I need to say
thank you to all of you who have and continue to write in and assist everyone going
through this incredibly drawn out and cumbersome process. You have been a definite
help to me. Now I need just a little more.....

I haven't crossed activating my Visa yet as our wedding is planned for the end of
September and I'm still working in Canada. We only live a little over an hour apart
so seeing each other every weekend has been acceptable although because I work in
education and have the summer off, we've enjoyed the past two months very much! SO
anyway, within the next coulpe of weeks I will be crossing and it leads me to a
coulpe of questions.

1. Once I cross I get a temporary work authorization stamp in my visa. What do I do
next? Do I go directly to the Social Security office to get a SSnumber? or do I
need to go get a driver's license first? or do I need to have a number to get a
license? An what about insuring my car? If anyone out there can offer some
knowledge especially in Michigan I would appreciate it vry much. Thanks : Todd

Hmmm what horror stories have come out of Montreal? I don't recall a single one.

As for your thank you to the group and offer to help others with the process, that is great. However, as the Queen Mother of Nag, it would serve the others greatly if you would cut and past your post to the official interview experience page for future generations. You can do that here:

TIA for your cooperation and congratulations.

As for the SS#, once you have activated the K-1, go to the nearest SS office and apply for the card. If they give you a run around, leave and go to another office.

Greetings from Michigan!!!

I'm not sure what SS office you will be using, but we used the Bay City office and
Mickey was processed within a matter of minutes. He recieved his number via phone
within four days, and his car within 7. He doesn't have his driving license yet
because he has to take a road test. Since you are from Canada, you won't have to
take a road test. When you go to the Secretary of State office to get your driver
license be sure to bring your birth certificate, your passport, and your Canadian
driving permit. They'll give you a written test, and once you pass that (you can get
11 wrong), you'll get your license.

As for insurance, Mickey isn't on my insurance yet because he doesn't have his
license. I've found the best rates to be with AAA if you have multiple policies and
you have your premiums deducted from your credit union account every month.

I'll also give you an insight on the AOS proceedure. It's a breeze. We were
actually missing a document, and they let us have someone fax it to them from home so
we didn't have to come back. All they are really interested in down there is if your
spouse has enough money to support you. We arrived at 5am and were out by noon. We
would have been finished by 9am, but we had to wait for my aunt to get ahold of my
mom to fax the document we needed. They also give you a time frame of when you're
going to be seen so that you can go and get yourself a bite to eat. Just beware of
the woman who sits at Counter 6. She is a mean, evil, cranky woman.

Hope this helps.

Hi Todd I am in Florida. No problem getting a SSN here. The day after we arrived we
went to the office and applied and I received my number over the phone 4 days later.
The only problem we encountered was insuring me on the car we purchased here. Dennis
is insured by GEICO, and even though I am 44 and have been driving since I was 16,
and have a clean record, they were going to charge us as though I was a new driver.
Luckily prior to leaving Canada, I had gotten a copy of my drivers' abstract as well
as a letter from my insurance broker stating I was a low risk driver. It did help to
drop the rates. Best of luck with the rest of your INS journey. Bonnie "AAngiela"

We do not live in Michigan, but thought if there were other posters from Louisiana
they might be interested in this.We have Farm Bureau insurance and there is no extra
charge being applied to our insurance. All we have to do is let them know when Clive
arrives and they are adding him without no problems or extra money.

Default Re: Driver's License? SSnumber? Car license plates/Insurance?

I live in CT and aparently the law here states that we need to show proof of living here permanently - that means showing them our AOS. Now - this is a major problem for us since we've been able to get our SS# and our Temp EAD easily - but we can't get a license. Meaning no car - no job (my fiance is a mechanic by trade - they require him to have a CT drivers licesne to work.) Is there any way out of this that anyone knows?????

Also I need to point out that my fiance is here about a month and a half before the wedding - so that means at least a month and a half to get the AOS!!!!!

Any help would be great!!
