The possessive "its"...as in his, hers or its ... where "it" is an object such as the dog.
Put it in his place.
Put it in her place.
Put it in its place.
Another way to look at when to use its or it's... If you look at "it's/its", and replace this with "it is", the does the sentence still make sense.
In the example above..."put it in ITS place" -> "put it in IT IS place"...doesn't make sense, so the correct way must be ITS.
Also works for "hers".
Correct: The bag is hers.
Incorrect: The bag is her's. Why? Because the apostrophe represents "i", and the sentence "the bag is her is" doesn't make sense.
