She has Medicare.

Not necessarily 65. If you become disabled, you get social security disability, and Medicare after 2 years.

I have a Brit friend who had surgery, and has been put on disability. She is in her 50s. She gets SS disability, Medicare, and also check from British State Pension for the years she worked in England (because she is disabled in US);
reciprocal agreement.

A good point... unfortunately, many people go bankrupt during that two year waiting period. Good to hear your friend didn't.

Sounds like a little tin can that you drink a fizzy drink out of.

In 1988, the first car that I wanted to buy with my own money was a gorgeous 1985-ish Skoda. I thought it was soooo cute. I was worried about the availability of parts though.

All over the place they were - I had an Anglia as a first car.
Loved it - so much fun to drive.

All over the place? Not in Oz in the late 1980s

I've never been in an Anglia.

Firt car I ever drove (by myself) was a Lada, an uncle owned it but he had a stroke and just wanted it to have a 'run around' occasionally. Not a bad little runner

I think like any place you live you are going to have things you love, hate and miss.
I wouldn't trade my time here for anything I did a lot of growing up and have four great kids, but yes I had my moments that no amount of friends could help me with.
I had my bouts of missing home, always around xmas time, things are diffrent thats for sure. As for the "dream" well thats what you make it.
I am moveing home back to the UK in January and really looking forward to it, I feel that my time here is done and I want to be around my family and friends. I have been gone 15 years and feel that my kids should know what its like to have a family outside of me and the dad.

(Sorry, just spotted your question)

Easy/hard - luckily I'm in a profession (university prof) that doesn't have a visa cap, but jobs are thin on the ground at the moment. Also, there's always the potential for a Search Committee to vote for the second-best because in these times, they might not be bothered to go through the visa application process (smaller institutions, mostly).

The hardest part is being 52 and not having as much energy for the apply - interview - offer - negotiation - visa - shipping (including dog - for the 4th time!) - reorienting to new environment - GC - USC process (overall, likely 10 years or so total). Like I said, with hindsight, I started all that in 1996 and could have been "there" by now, but I try not to beat myself up over my bad decisions.

Of course, if I met some cute American who likes a bald middle-aged guy with a weird sense of humour, strange accent, and a cute dog, the process could be simpler. Nah, ain't gonna happen. Where are those Jaffa cakes?
