But you have been brainwashed to think that deliberate rudeness shows independent thinking, It doesn't, it means you are a part of a different, smaller group but you are still being conventionally unconventional.

I'm struggling to think of an occasion where I was somewhere that actually played the national anthem now.
I'd stand though, even though I don't know it well enough to sing it. Unless it is one of those godawful sporting arena versions of it, it should only last a few minutes and then on you go.
It is what it is, far better just to keep quiet and stand for a few minutes, rather than risk getting into a barney about it.
It's America, FFS - you might get shot
Why bother? Prayer doesn't deserve respect.

There are places, I'm sure, where not singing the national anthem might get you followed by a couple of good ol' boys who want a word.
This really isn't a country that is well set up for stirring the pot, sometimes. It's rather like playing a game of Operation. It's all well and good trying to go for the funnybone but sooner or later the bloke's nose will light up and it's game over

My first visit to Six Flags Great America (15 minutes from our gaff
) - we arrived before opening and they played it then, you are correct. I was already standing at the time, though.
