As someone's already said, the 30-second-forward button is very nearly as good as automatic ad skipping, and doesn't require you to buy totally obsolete gear!
Err...by default, but you could always stick in an extra hard drive, and hard drives being as cheap as they are, can get a 350gb drive for $180, and an average hour long tv show is only 350mb....so that's a lot of tele...

We got ours through Dish Network when we moved along with Satellite in three rooms.

Couldn't live without DVR now. Way easier than VHS tapes and I love how you can grab a whole series with one touch of button.

Sonos - $1199 to listen to music in another room? Jesus Christ! Can't you just open the door and turn up the volume

Works for me - except I have blown out a few speakers in my time.

Yup - 150- channels of complete shite

I do like watching top gear though, and the occasional episode of friends

We find the TV we want to watch is on late at night (post accusations as you see fit ).

It's useful to grab these so we can watch them the next day.

But, most of the TV available is crap. 150 channels of nothing but we have a few regular shows we watch so they get recorded to watch again if they were good.

Plus I like the fact I can pause a show at anytime to grab a smoke without missing anything

I wish the Jon Stewart show was longer. With TiVo I can zip through the day's in under 20 mins.

Ad breaks are for taking a piss. I'd get to into something and piss my pants if I had a DVR.

Err... have you looked at what's involved in replacing the hard drive in a TiVo and getting it working? I'm highly technical and I wouldn't be arsed to try that little hacking project!

Best $1200 I've spent in years (well $1500 once you've added two sets of speakers)!

We didn't have a music system of any sort other than the computer speakers, so the Sonos system is the first real stereo we've had since we got here.

Now we have a beautiful remote control with a 4" colour-screen and a scroll wheel to set up playlists, view album art and control the thousands of tracks stored on our computer, plus a couple of little wireless boxes that pump out great quality music across the house, stream audio from the TV to any other room, play internet radio across the house and much, much more.

It's not cheap, but it's more than worth it, and a fraction of the cost of wiring all our rooms for audio.

Just make sure your network is secure with all those wireless signals bouncing around

Wouldn't want the next door neighbors hogging the bandwidth.

Luckily Sonos uses a proprietary 256bit encrypted signal, not the standard WiFi. That was the only way that they could avoid the RIAA suing them for distributing copyright material over the airwaves.

Still, the boxes do act as wireless bridges for WiFi, so you can hook up a remote PC to a Sonos box and get a broadband connection

So from the poll: 19 of us have DVRs but only 3 knows what it does.
