As someone's already said, the 30-second-forward button is very nearly as good as automatic ad skipping, and doesn't require you to buy totally obsolete gear!

We got ours through Dish Network when we moved along with Satellite in three rooms.
Couldn't live without DVR now. Way easier than VHS tapes and I love how you can grab a whole series with one touch of button.

Works for me - except I have blown out a few speakers in my time.

It's useful to grab these so we can watch them the next day.
But, most of the TV available is crap. 150 channels of nothing but we have a few regular shows we watch so they get recorded to watch again if they were good.
Plus I like the fact I can pause a show at anytime to grab a smoke without missing anything

Ad breaks are for taking a piss. I'd get to into something and piss my pants if I had a DVR.

We didn't have a music system of any sort other than the computer speakers, so the Sonos system is the first real stereo we've had since we got here.
Now we have a beautiful remote control with a 4" colour-screen and a scroll wheel to set up playlists, view album art and control the thousands of tracks stored on our computer, plus a couple of little wireless boxes that pump out great quality music across the house, stream audio from the TV to any other room, play internet radio across the house and much, much more.
It's not cheap, but it's more than worth it, and a fraction of the cost of wiring all our rooms for audio.

Wouldn't want the next door neighbors hogging the bandwidth.

Still, the boxes do act as wireless bridges for WiFi, so you can hook up a remote PC to a Sonos box and get a broadband connection

So from the poll: 19 of us have DVRs but only 3 knows what it does.
