Chris Rock's mom: Cracker Barrel discriminated

I'm sorry but I WAS at a Cracker Barrel last week in Georgia with my mum and sister who were visiting from the UK. We waited 45 minutes for our food and the service was terrible. Was it discrimination? Some people were getting served (it depended on their order). We found out they were a chef short.

I'm done with the disrimination card being played for something like this.. It works both ways.

In GA. The people who work for Cracker Barrel are nicer than most servers I get served by.. of any race. It's a low paid, high turnover industry. If it was racism, sue the PERSON, not the company... The world's gone mad...

Say what you like. I've worked in a restaurant that intentionally sat black people and Mexicans in the back near the kitchen. It was an unwritten policy.

I have to agree. We had to wait a long time for our food one time too. People had come , ate and left before we got ours. Apparently they lost the order. On another occasion the food was so cold we had to send it back. My wife didn't want to for fear of it getting spat on so the manager cooked it personally for her.

The clue was in the first part of the name of the restaurant.

The article states that there have been numerous lawsuits filed for discrimination against black customers, minorities and gay employees. While you may have experienced slow service with a reason given for that slow service, it would appear that Ms Rock was simply ignored.

I've eaten there ONCE. The service was so pathetic, I said I'd never do it again. (Maybe they thought I was hispanic with a blonde/blue-eyed hubby?) :confused: :confused:

We've had shitty meals ourselves sometimes in places, including waiting longer than normal or watching others get serverd ahead of us, or cold food. Did I feel discriminated against? No...I was annoyed and mentioned it. In one instance we got a discount on another we got free puddings. In this case the manager offered Ms Rock a free meal, but - oh no - thats not enough they want money, because they had to wait a whole 30 minutes!!!! Tell them to **** off.

I'm sure real discrimination has and does occur, but all this kind of crap does is make it harder for real cases to be heard.

Once knew a couple from online gaming, hubby was a truck driver and his wife was a chef. He used to hate going out to eat anywhere other than fast food joints as she would always send the food back, even his.

Yup. All up and down the interstates. They have these really cute country stores attached to the restaurant - that I go to, but never the restaurant.

AWP, I agree with you on service and perceptions. When we got married, we had to fly to New York to get my wife her British Visa. We stayed in a 4 star hotel a block away from the consulate. On the last day, we were waiting for a taxi and decided to eat in the restaurant in the hotel. We were also in jeans and casual tops. The cheapest items on the menu were $25 philly cheese steaks. We had piss poor service , the guy barely acknowledged us. We had to wait 20 minutes for him to take our order and then after bringing us the food he never came back or refilled our drinks. This is the only time in the states that we have paid for food with exact change.

The flip side of this is a local Ryan's buffet. There is a guy there, William, from Brazil. He is one of the best waiters I have seen. Our glasses are never empty, he will bring us fresh food from the kitchen and he has got to know us so well he knows when I change from drinking softdrinks to Coffee in a meal. When he goes home to Brazil he brings us back Brazilian coffee. Needless to say he gets more than the 15-20% tip from us.

I just bought the first series of Everybody Hates Chris and it has given me a different perspective on this story. The series is hilarious, loosely based on Chris Rock's childhood as the only black child in a white school. It is never self pitying and interviews with him and about his family do not make me feel they would be out for money.

It is different being discriminated against rather than ignored. My (black) DH rarely has a problem but you can usually tell the difference.

Our recent experience in a redneck karaoke bar was rather interesting- people singled us out shaking his hand and gave us a big welcome.

He's actually very funny - and according to Rock his parents were very straight and very strict during his childhood. I don't think she is looking for money probably just an apology.

I'll meet you halfway on this one. I don't think Sharpton needs to get involved.

Two points:

1) In SC, as well as the rest of the old South a well run buisiness CAN NOT afford to discriminate- as blacks comprise 50% or so of their available clients. To do so would be suicide. Our local CB usually has well over 50% black customers when I have gone, and the place is ALWAYS packed.

2) I eat out at CB often when I travel, as it provides a decent meal at a decent price and service usually is quite good- however once in a while, I have had bad service at CB as well as at every other chain resturant. I know the bad service is usually due to a poor waitress, or someone called in sick and they are short handed...not institutional racisim or some other conspiracy.

3) CB is not a southern thing- I see them all the way from central GA to Saginaw MI, every 30 miles or so.

Total bullshit. Over a 30 minute wait. I dont care what anyone says this politically and financially motivated. If all they wanted was an appology then why not ask for that? After all the were offered a free meal at the time - which they conveniently turned down as they were "not hungry"...which is odd for someone that has been waiting in a resturant for 30 minutes.

I never eat at a place after I've made a stink. They will spit in your food. It's obvious that what she is saying is that by the time they got service they were so pissed off they didn't want to give them their business.

Sharpton's motivations are political, I doubt he needs the money though. I seriously doubt that Chris Rock's mother needs the money either and I doubt that she's involved in politics.

Is it so hard to believe that maybe just maybe it's just the principle of the matter?

Principal of what matter? She was offered a free meal as recompense for her (not very long) wait but refused. It's not like the manager turned round to her and said "Hey nigger I'm not going to serve you". Now she's going to sue. FFS if I sued every one that's pissed me off in a shop or resturant I'd never be out of a court room.

If she wasnt black and had had to wait (yes beleive it or not whites get made to wait sometimes too) I'm pretty sure this would have all the impetus of a dead kipper.

Maybe it's frivolous - maybe it's not. Based on what little I've read I can't defend her case any more than you can reject it. We weren't there.
