This is all well and good when on holiday, but making friends in a foreign country isn't about accents. It all seems to fall flat after "OMG I love UR accent". No criticism meant, just 9 years worth of experience. Being a tourist is not the same. Everything seems awesome when you're on holiday.

I should have been reading this thread, I suppose, but I am one of these unfriendly American people, right? I would be happy to make friends, and you might see me down at the local pub one of these days, the one frequented by expat oil workers, and looking a bit lost. Wander over and say hello.

Agreed 100%. This place isn't for grownups who believe in driving sensibly, manners, living within your means and that going to clubs after age 25 starts to get a wee bit pathetic and tiresome.

LOL! I remember turning up (drunk) to a tutorial being given by a visiting American philosophy professor. I thought he said "Imagine if there were no such things as cars", so started to recreate a world without automobiles in my mind. It was only after 20 mins of him repeating the word "cars" that I worked out that he was saying "cause"!!

He must have been from NY or Boston area not saying the Rs.

Americans love to party hard and we enjoy spending time making new friends. I've seen nothing but positive reactions from Americans when meeting Brits.And you're right,the various British accents do go over well in America.I remember being in NYC one day and while placing an order at a Dunkin Donuts, there was a British guy standing at the counter placing his order.Right behind him was a person that over heard him and noticed the accent, and commented how much they admired his British accent.Everyone in line smiled and the british dude loved all the attention. Americans are a friendly lot.
Different from an ongoing friendship.
