I think it depends where you live in America. I lived in NYC for 7 years and I had no problems fitting in. I suppose part of the reason is that NY is such a melting pot and people seem to be tolerant of people from other cultures/counties.
I have just spent 18 months in California. I had difficulties making friends with people and I felt like a fish out of water. Although people appeared laid back and friendly, it was really very superficial and image was very important. I left 6 months ago and do not miss California one little bit, despite in being a beautiful place physically.
