Of course, being female, they think I'm an idiot who's waiting for my husband to come along eventually.
When I was younger I would tell them my credentials but I can't be fussed these days.

I know I take the piss out of it, but generally the service in the States is miles ahead of the UK. I think it probably seems overbearing because we're not used to it. In the UK if you ask someone about an item, the answer is generally "If it's not on the shelf, we ain't got it"

My husband refuses to set foot in a Raymour & Flanigan furniture store after we were stalked by a salesman in there. He introduced himself by name as we walked in and said to give him a shout if we needed anything. He followed us around the whole store hiding behind furniture so we couldn't actually see him. If we stopped to look at anything he came out of hiding immediately and asked if we needed any help. In the end I started laughing about it but hubby did not find it amusing.
R&F is in our local shopping mall and my hubby is convinced that the sales people in there actually stalk people as they walk past and are eyeing up their prey.

But they do the same damn thing that happens at workplaces, thinking that all women must be secretaries.

Sales people in sports shops in the US and UK are exactly the same, they are all absolutely useless.

I have to say that on the whole I prefer service here. If I want something theres always a lackey to get it for me. Having said that I dont like to be stalked by a salesperson hoping I'll drop my loose change. I've found furniture stores to be the worst for stalking but in most other places I normally just say "Its ok im just looking. I'll call you if i need you." and they get the message.
One thing I REALLY liked was in publix the other day I as I was unloading my groceries on the conveyor a lackey walking by stopped and asked if i'd found everything I wanted. When I said no I couldnt find the Soy Milk they promptly scuttled away and re-emerged 30 seconds later bearing a selection for me to choose from. Now THAT is what I call excellent service. I let the duty manager know how impressed I was.
