coyotes

Here in West Seattle there is something of a coyote invasion, more and more sightings reported, and more in the daylight hours. A cat taken and eaten from some ones veranda, and most recently a dog attacked in a fenced back yard. We are keeping the cats in at night these days.

This is not something any department of city government is bothered about, so they are just left to breed and go through garbage and attack household pets.

There is discussion about what should be done, from nothing from coyote huggers, to drugging and moving to the mountains to killing the bastards. I,'m all for wild life in the wild but they can sod off out of the city, this is our manor.

Any other cities under the menace of coyotes?

In my part o Texas we keep skunks as house pets. They are turned out at night to keep our trailer lots safe

Re: coyotes

I thought this might be immigration related.

They tend to hit the urban areas when their natural sources are low. This year there seems a lot more game around and the weather has been very mild if also very dry.

I have heard them howling at dusk, but have not seen any.

ahahahaha!

Actually you can often hear them howling at night even in urban Phoenix. Just the other night we had the doors open and could hear it in the distance. Betsy our dog stood up totally alert and started tilting her head trying to asertain the direction.

Also one day recently walking Betsy we come across this trail of bloody paw prints meandering along the sidewalk across the road all the way along our usual walk. Guessed a dog had been hit by a car and started running around crazy. Only thing was those paw prints were really BIG. I think there is a sanctuary nearby.

Re: coyotes

They used to walk down the middle of the road when we lived in Woodland Hills in L.A. They wouldn't even move when you drove down the street, you'd have to stop and pap your horn at them, then they would just stare at you for a few seconds before moving ever so slightly out of your way.

Lots of small pets went missing there too.

Re: coyotes

One's been seen in our neighbourhood in the last week and I know of a couple more that are no longer walking around....

Re: coyotes

I live close enough to wilderness that there isn't much the council can do. A few cats and dogs go missing each year, sometimes hear them howling. But if you kill them more will just come out of the forest. People aren't generally bothered by coyotes though, it's the cougars they are scared of. Not many of them around though. An aunt was terrified of leaving her house after a cougar sighting, the b-i-l says to her "You live on Lion Mountain, named after the mountain lions who live there, you should have bought a house on hamster mountain if you are scared of the wildlife"

Re: coyotes

There was a rash of them last year in lower westchester county, new york (only 30 miles from NYC). Yes they go for the household pets and have attacked animals who were being walked on a lease and there were two occurrences of them going after toddlers.

This year's invasion was smaller and included a fox with her kits who was quite threatening to people passing by, black bears (I actually saw one along the Garden State Parkway in the treeline) one day and rabid raccoons.

Hi
We are down in Conroe , Texas, we live in the woods. I happened to look through the voile curtains saw a dark shape sat in the front paddock .
The coyote was sat staring at the house, freaked me out. It was casing the place. We have a cat , dozens of chickens, 2 goats and a Border terrier dog that thank goodness was in the house because she would have tackled it and come worse off probably .. It was large wolf like even. I went to the back deck looking for my 22 but it saw me and scarpered..

 sorry but that just made me laugh. Bit spooky though.
We are pretty rural, lots of Coyotes, Mountain lions bob cats around here. They must be well fed as the Deer population has exploded and doesn't seem to be getting picked off. I slowed down to let a Coyote cross the street the other day. It was the healthiest looking one I'd ever seen, nice bushy tail and good looking coat. We lost all our chickens to something, not sure what, probably coyotes.

Re: coyotes

I do have a plan, to combat the coyote menace. I have painted a long tunnel on to a sheet and hung it over the garage door, I fully expect the coyote to run at it and knock itself out, as the garage door is pretty substantial. I am also in conversation with the ACME company, as I believe they have several products that may help. I have put an order in for an anvil.

Re: coyotes

We keep a mule with the horses. We have never seen a coyote in our pastures.
Mules are very protective. You might want to get one as a pet for your goats.

The only unwelcome guests we see, well smell, are skunks. Lots of rabies cases in this part of Texas. Only ever had to try to kill one of them, as it was out during the day, so I feared it may be rabid. By the time I got to the ranch and got my rifle it was off down a greek bed I didn't care to follow. I now keep a shotgun in the pickup, and have a spare mag of rounds for my carry that have .45 shot shells in them. Too much risk of collateral damage using a pistol with regular rounds, my neighbors run black angus to the north of me. The .45 shot shells are good for snakes too.

Its sad to see the increase in lost dogs signs posted around our neighbourhood this time of year. Now its cooled down people are leaving their pets out. The lost dogs signs are always posted for smaller dogs who escaped from the back yard between 8am and 5pm.
It not a good idea to leave pets unattended plus your dog won't be barking and annoying the neighbors all day.

Illegal as a pet in MA....but you can have a croc or up to a 30 foot snake...

There were a few coyotes and wolves up where we used to live in Maine, especially wolves, but never really a problem with numbers.

That's a big problem with moose up in Maine....really dangerous as they're next to impossible to see.

Coyotes are a regular nuisance in our neck of the woods.
Just have to watch that my dogs don't go outside at night and take them on.
They regularly go after the neighbor's chickens and goats.

Re: coyotes

I like the way that skunk in the video turned and made a rude gesture at the camera (or that's how it looked to me  )

The coyotes loiter outside the subdivision here at night and yip yip yip just to wind up and attract the local dogs.

Bring back hunting

Ooops wrong country.

Re: coyotes

We've had emails from the vets and the kennels warning about an uptick in the coyote and bobcat attacks on pets in the last couple of months.

In the past when we've been riding out in the country just west of town, the roadkill has just been the usual armadillo, deer, dogs, snakes etc (plus a horse once (:scaredhair:)) This summer for the first time we've come across quite a few dead bobcats and coyotes, some of them pretty close in to the subdivisions.

We have coyotes here - I don't let the cats out at night for that reason.

I do worry more about hitting a moose though...

Thanks you just reminded me , our dog needs her yearly rabies shot!

The cooler weather definately brings out the local wildlife. we also have more hawks than usual, they`ve swooped down in on the chickens, fearless of whether i am there or not !

I live in the 'exurbs' here, and often see coyotes around. Bears are becoming more common.

Wildlife is coming back, I like it. Recently watched a hawk chasing a squirrel around a tree in the most fantastic display of flight I've ever seen. But wolves and cougars can be dangerous to a grown man let alone a kid.

Btw, when some hawks moved into a tree on our property a few years ago, and had some peepers, one dive bombed my wife :D

We had our first bear, full grown male Black bear, it roamed about the houses for two days then disappeared again. I hope it went back to the lake and the mountains behind that.
One of my friends on facebook stated a map and all the neighbors were adding the times and places it was seen it made two loops, down to the river and up to my friends horse property, drove all the dogs crazy and pilfered some fruits and veg out of a few yards.

Have you ever seen them kill something? I was playing golf one time in Mesa. Two of them cornered some kind of big bird on someones patio. It took them all of 2 seconds to rip this thing to bits. Feathers flying everywhere. Not a sound, just carnage. Do not mess with them.

I agree the wildlife is amazing here, the hawks are divebombing the chickens daily.. problem with racoons at the moment , the a re managing to dig under the chicken coop and literally grab the chickens under the wire fencing. once got divebombed in England by an owl not once but several times , freaky! wished someone could have videod it..must have looked hilarious:rofl:

You need a tough wire fence "floor" under the dirt of the chicken coop. We know someone who keeps chickens here in the northeast, and both foxes and raccoons will easily dig under chicken coops.

Yes, CT has coyotes. People we know are making sure they get their pets into the house before dark.

...Though we were told they're not true coyotes here in the eastern US, but actually coy-wolves, a new hybrid coyote/wolf that's bigger than a coyote but doesn't have the aversion to living near humans that a typical wolf does. Thus the coy-wolves are supposed to be more dangerous than either true coyotes or true wolves.
