Contra Costa County Assessor
Hello there...
Since we moved into our new home a couple of months ago, I have been bombarded with variety of rubbish mail which I have been good to ignore. The attached is something I am not sure if I should ignore. I seem to remember someone tell me of this 7K exemption.
In any case, just wanted to check in to see if this is something I respond to. Sounds like I should....but given this was occupanied by a "BOE-266 (P1) REV. 11(05-12) CLAIM FOR HOMEOWNERS' PROPERTY TAX EXEMPTION" form & I have to provide my SSN, I thought i check with you guys.
Thanks in advance.

I'd say 9 out of 10 times something i the mail asking for a SSN that you don't know about such as a credit card application, then chances are it's a scam.

Seems legit to me:

6. How do I qualify for a Homeowners' Exemption?
If you own and occupy your home as your principal place of residence on January 1, you may apply for an exemption of $7,000 off your assessed value for an annual savings of approximately $70 on your property taxes. New property owners will automatically receive an exemption application. The exemption remains in effect until terminated or there is a change in title to the property. A homeowners' exemption may also apply to a supplemental assessment. For more information, call (925) 313-7481.

Re: Contra Costa County Assessor
The letter you got does not look very official, I agree, but it sounds like what we have in Florida - Homestead exemption.
Look it up for your area, without following any leads on that letter. You probably have to "register" with the county, to get discount on your property tax.

The mailing address is the same as the accessors office so it is likely legitimate.

You're wise to be very cautious re: giving out your social sec.number
However - It looks to me that this is legit.
To put your mind at rest - call the phone number for the Property Tax Assessors office that appears on that yellow flyer - and confirm that the form you received asking for your social - came from them. Do it quickly - I
think (?) they request receipt of the info before mid-Feb.
As a California property owner I can tell you that you DEFINITELY want to avail yourself of the "Homeowners Exemption" (it won't amount to much - but hey....better in your pocket than "Uncle Sams", right?)
