Default Car Insurance

ALL,

We soon fly into San Diego and make our way up to LA and then SF by road. We will be renting a car and I need some help with insurance. Now I know, this may have been discussed on the forum and I have been through the search engine but most of the posters are either from UK heading to US or visa versa.

Blame it on my impatience, I thought I rather ask & as such insurance is something I dont want to rely on forum discussions from months ago - just in case if anything has changed.

So from what I know - we have 3 types of insurances.

LDW - Loss Damage Waiver. This covers you for damage or theft of the vehicle.

LIS - Liability Insurance Supplement.

PAI - Personnal Accident insurance/Personnal Effect Coverage. Covers accidental death or medical expenses for anyone in the car. Also covers personnal belongings.

I am not worried about PAI - as I already ahve travel insurance via my credit card (AmEx).

On LDW - it's about 10$ a month so I will add that on.

What I am worried about is the personal liability/property insurance. This is something I want to add on and I need help with getting the cheapest & decent cover.

I also read about the AmEx card ~20$ flat LDW but it's unclear to me if that is for american residents only (I am from Australia and I will be calling the guys here).

COuld you guys let me know how to best organize it all?

Thanks in advance.

No such thing as "cheap" and "decent". Don't skimp... the US fosters a chronic, litigious society. It's a rental... get the full coverage - and if there's a wreck you can just walk away and wash your hands of it. I wouldn't get less than $2 million liability coverage.

Are you sure that the LDW is $10 a month?

That is unbelievably low - $10 per day would be more like what most companies charge.

Shoot - yes it indeed is 9$ a day...that said my questions is around the American Express (https://www152.americanexpress.com/p...do?source=OPEN) & also if anyone does know how much is comprehensive insurance a day?

Ian - thanks for your input, understood.

I use the AMEX insurance...then you have no additional insurance fees to pay the rental car company. Someone started a thread about it a few months ago.

Edit: Here's the thread.

I have been through the thread when I initially did my search.

Called AmEx and a AU issued card does not come with rental car insurance so it now comes down to taking up the LDW + Property/third liability insurance.
