Back on topic

I always booked economy round trip tickets with BA. On the last trip over I booked a return for six months down the line but as the flight time drew nearer it wasn't going to be practical to make a trip back to Blighty so I cancelled it.
I expected BA to work out a refund of x amount and then clout me for fees of x-1. I was somewhat surprised when they refunded me more than 50% of what I'd paid for the out and back flights about a month after the date of the return tickets. YMMV.
