Default Camera, action......

Hoping to visit US next month.
I want to buy a camcorder. Would this be the right time to buy?
Would it be much cheaper than the UK?
What are the best shops for this? I would like to look up their websites to see before I buy.
I am thinking about a Sony (recommended by Which magazine)
Anyone got any recommendations?

try a local Fry's or costco or SAMs club. Compare online first. At $2 to a pound, you are quids in

Don't you need a membership for Sam's or Costco?

Shop recommendations might also depend on where you're going (the US is a pretty big country and there are still some local stores rather than the big chains). For example, if NYC you might want to also look at jr.com and bhphotovideo.com (there are probably others just can't think of them right now).

I have a Sony DVD camcorder and love it. I downloaded some free DVD ripping software that does a good job of transferring the stuff onto the computer so it works well for me. The only reason I got this one though was because I had enough Marriott rewards points to get it for free - would still recommend it though.

We used to go to Sam's when we lived in the city, there isn't a Sam's or Costco within 60 miles of us now.

I went to one (Can't remember which one) about a year ago with my Mom.

I bought a 7lb (not a typo, seven pound!) industrial sized can of chocolate pudding. My kids nearly prayed to it...

If he's a member of Costco in the UK he can use his membership card here.

At least with Costco (can't speak for Sam's) if you don't like it after you've tried it you can get a full refund. Most stores charge a 10/15% restocking fee.

I take my sister and friends Costco shopping when I'm there...paying membership to shop sort of goes against the British grain. I've also used it in Canada.

I'm a girl and I have a Makro card but not a Costco card.
Does Makro exist in the States.
Oh and it's Elkhart and South bend in Indiana I'll be visiting.
Is Radioshack any good.

Neil - What's the model number of your Sony?
I quite like the look of the SR32 and SR33.
Still trying to decide if I prefer DVD,or hard disk

No idea on the model number right now but I would imagine it's been superceded now as it's at least 3 years old. I would imagine any Sony would be pretty good.

You can buy PAL camcorders etc from smaller stores in 'tourist' areas. I wouldn't touch those stores with a barge pole...they know in a few days you're gonna be thousands of miles away.
