Default Buying and Insuring a Car....

Hi,

My husband has just gone to DMV with all the required paperwork to get a learners permit but has been refused both the test to get a licence and an ID card, due to some sort of immigration problem.... they said they would have to sort it out (nothing my husband could do) but it would take at least 5 working days. Now this causes us a problem, as our relocation package has only provided 30 days of car rental and that is very nearly at an end (we were intending to buy a car this weekend after the DMV visit).... we have been told we cant buy a car without either a CT licence or ID card, but having searched on this forum, it looks like that may be incorrect, and that we CAN buy a car, just as long as we have some sort of photo ID (like a passport or US employer ID card). We have also bought some insurance through GEICO, although I think this is just liability insurance, not for a specific car.

Could anyone confirm, can we go ahead and buy a car (we have UK licence and international driving permit) and will we be able to fully insure it and legally drive?

Thank you!

You can buy a car fine. I think it's only NJ that make it a issue without a state license.

The IDP is worthless though.

And if the insurance company is fine with the foreign license, you're ok. But you need to check the dmv to see how long you have before you have to get a state license, but as long as you make best effort to get it quickly, you are usually okay.

Just strange, they say there's an immigration problem but can't say what it actually is?

You can buy a car in america if you are over 100, blind, can't walk or are missing required limbs.

I know I've been to Sun City, AZ.
