... and then there's Connectuicut!
Under an hour from NYC by car and probably minutes by train. (Not many Brits here though) It's very pretty here, and civilised... they cook the sushi at our Dunkin Donuts!

2008 is also a likely year to come across as this is when my wife's MBA finishes. I know this is some time away but I want to get the city we choose right before we come across - hence the number of Q's. We've been to NY and loved it but also heard that Boston was worth a look.
We'd prefer to live in the City/Manhattan if we can afford it. Plus, not sure I want my wife mixing with people who slag of the husband for not painting the house/gardening/drinking too much - I'd never stand a chance
Thanks to all so far for advice/comments.

Hey, you guys are just so friendly and helpful. I'm gonna love reading this site (and hopefully adding my own 2-pennies worth from time to time).
Thanks for the warm welcome and comments to date.

Re: Brits in New York
Hi there!
Not a Brit, I am from NYC. I love it and want to return home one day in a couple of years. I liev in Glasgow at the moment.
Manhattan.. very expensive, all I have to say (and I'm sure you knew that) but there has got to be some decent apartments perhaps downtown like financial district or the east village I saw a few there that were about 1800-2000/month (and that is the cheapest I've found! ). Upper Manhattan, such as Harlem, Washington Heights, and Inwood also have apartments that are in about the same price range. I personally would not live in Harlem, it used to be quite a rough area but I heard they were trying to improve it (in what way I've no clue) But most apartments I've seen around Manhattan are for about 2000-4000/month!
Look hard, you might find something decent in your price range. Good luck with your plans.

Thanks for the info - I'll bear that in mind if I ever get to Connecticut.
Though my question was rhetorical...
