Tarkak: was the expat police chief elected, perhaps?

That would be a very roundabout way of doing it - and you'd have to have decent experience in fraud, counterfeiting, forensics to be brought over here. The US is knee-deep in ex-cops and agents (many of whom are not very good).

Would you ever work in corrections (nightmare) or in the military?

Is there a way that anyone trying to post in any of the immigration forums for the first time would be flashed with a message along the lines of: "Before you start a thread, check whether your query is answered in ..."

Also an automatic link to anyone using the words 'marriage/married' plus 'VWP' in their first thread ............. to an explanation of the 10-foot pole

Chris, enjoy the move but please always be a British Bobby in your heart, 'cos the American cops are nowhere as good or professional as the British.

Down here in Texas, I feel the Gestapo and Heinrich Himmler trained the police here. The American public by and large are quite afraid and apprehensive about their police force. I couldn't give a monkeys about American police...lol, I got stopped doing 86 in a 65 and the copper said...Do you know what speed you were doing? I said, Course I know what bloody speed I was doing, I'm late for work

American cops are over-zealous and constables are ELECTED. Beware.

Unhappy Re: British Police officer wanting to transfer

thanks for that - but it seems its a bit of a hopeless dream. I just want to move to America - police or no police. I was hoping my degree in english might help but all these websites and visa sites don't appear to be giving me much hope.

??? The actual county Sheriff is an elected position (There's only one per county); their deputy's (i.e. constables) are fully trained police officers recruited into the force.
