Yep -- use the driving license. Place in extra safeguards on security of data. Place in extra security for issue of license. Don't extend the data collected. Don't link data to other databases. Severely limit access to the data by other government departments (require judicial overview).

Both my father and uncle used to not carry their driving licenses as a matter of principle (it wasn't required and they wished to exercise that right). They would not be happy at the current proposals. They were both in WWII, and were used to id's being issued in times of war, but believed that one of the things they fought for was freedom from such a measure of state control of the population. I must be an anachronism.

I remember finding it odd when I left Blighty having to carry my driving license. Been doing it for so long now, it's always with me. Amazing how they grind you down, isn't it!

Also remember when small my mother turning the house upside down looking for her license (it was a booklet in those days!) after she'd been caught yet again speeding in her bright yellow Escort with the rally stripes. Don't think she ever carried it, either.

On a side note, my uncle frequently had to get his license and take it down to the police station because of speeding. He had a theory that cars were manufactured so that the speedometer read 10 mph faster than the car was actually going in order to make the customer feel good, so he got done for speeding quite a bit. But then he was a classics master.......................

You don't have to carry it with you in the UK but in the case of an traffic accident or violation you have to produce it at a police station within 7 days. Same with insurance documents. Or at least that used to be the case.

You would think he would have learned that this was not the case after the first, or at the very least the second time of being caught speeding! Or did he believe that the speeding guns the cops used were also set 10 mph faster too? lol

Hard to say. He was more at home with Homer than with the coppers. He thought they were just a necessary nuisance.

Does that mean you are no longer giving the poor sales associates a hard time over (not) showing them your DL?

First and foremost there is no need for it - if you want people to have id on them we have driving licenses and passports. The issuance of driving licenses could easily be expanded to cover id cards like they do with state id's in the US.

So far I've heard the following reasons given/excuses made/lies told:
1. We can't use dl's as id because not all people drive
2. We can't use passports as id because not everyone has one (not everyone has an id card either)
3. An id card scheme will cut down on crime - HOW ??
4. An id card scheme will cut down on illegal immigration - SERIOUSLY, HOW ???
5. The majority of the public actually want id cards, its just the pesky house of lords who are holding things up - BOLLOCKS

Oh, and one last thing - how will it cost every person £80 to get a card - hardly very cost effective now is it

RANT OVER

f'ing ridiculous.

Had to chuckle at the list of organisations that had access....bailiffs, credit control, debt collectors, leisure centers, solicitors....hold up a bit, back up there - lesiure centres? Doesn't exactly fit with the flow now does it?

Have to say, I'm not too bothered about the ID card as such, what worries me is articles like this one. What pisses me off is the cost of them. And what really gets me pissed off are the lies and underhand tactics used by that tw@t with the dog and the muppet that replaced him to try to get the legislation through.
