British Doctors / Physicians / Consultants etc in the US
Are there any UK trained / qualified Docs here. If so please let me know, I have a lot of questions I would like to ask and I would rather hear it from the horses mouth.
I know you have to do USMLEs, then residency. Is that still the same if you are already a GP in the UK? Or even a consultant? Isn't that like going from being a GP / Consultancy, to FY1 / FY2 in the UK? If so is it really worth it?
Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm just weighing up options on what to do after my degree. If you have moved, when did you do your USMLE, was it worth it? What would you do differently? I've heard that Foreign qualifed docs don't always get the best posts and there is a bit of a stigma attached to them . . please advise.
Also - the visa issue, how does it work, what was the process (job 1st, then visa or vice versa?), how long did it take etc.
Salary? Is it at least the same as the UK?
If you like pm me or reply here. Thanks in advance.

You are training to be a doctor in the UK, with your training presumably paid for by the NHS.
And then you plan to bu99er off to the US?
Nice one...

Actually I'm paying over £20 000 a year since top up fees - used to pay £8000 as a foreigner. Although I'm now british, the University will not allow me to pay home fees since I started as a Foreign student.
Just to let you know, there is a shortage of training posts anyway in the UK.
I wish I paid home fees, and even then I would still move. My husband and I pay too much tax and get nothing back especially since we are childless. I still get to pay high fees even though I'm now British, and we've never claimed benefits in our lives, go figure!
Anyway - I'll await any answers to my questions

I don't know of any docs here, not to say there aren't any.
There is a section here http://britishexpats.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=73
called jobs by profession, though there isn't a section on Doctors, maybe you would get more chance of someone whos' a Doctor seeing it?
Re visas etc if you post specific questions in the visa section here, you might get more help

You people are all so nice. I pay over £20 000 a yr in fees, simply because I started as a foreginer, even thought I'm now brit. This is over 17k more than my classmates.
I started this thread asking for advise I didn't come here to be ambushed about fees. I think I pay enough, thank you very much and I am not asking to pay less, I just want info on GPs moving to US.
@ Irn-bru, thanks I'll check that out.

And I'm sure you are getting something for your taxes, and you'd get even more if you stayed in the UK. Part of the role of the tax system if to even out inequalities between the fortunates and the less fortunates.
I think anyone who trains to become a doctor should have to commit him/herself to work off at least part of the cost of training.

Isn't the requirement residency (4 yrs?) not citizenship? I'm a British citizen and my children have been since birth, but they would still have to pay the overseas student rate if they wanted to do a degree in England.

I probably would stay and work in England if I paid £3000 a yr (home fees). But I pay International fees, so clearly I'm entitled to go where I want to.
With training posts becoming scarce, I wont be surprised if most Juniors are given posts outside the UK.
- In response to the citizenship question - It depends on your situation. I think 4 yrs if on a work permit or ancestry visa. 2 yrs on a spouse.
Why would your Kids pay international fees in the UK if they are british? They are entitled to pay home fees at 3K / yr.

But don't want to derail the thread into a debate on Socialism, OP just wanted some info not a debate.

Note* I even wrote to my MP who passed the letter to the Min. of Edu. He said I was entitled to pay £3000 instead of £20 000 plus per yr, since my circumstances had changed, i.e. been here more than 3rys and no limit on visa via spouse etc. However he also said universities are independent, the final decision lies with them.
Guys, I'm not worried about fees I know the rules. I just want to know how a GP can move to the US. That's all, I hope someone can give me info on this. As far as I'm concerned I still pay overseas fees and what I do after my education is up to me- I don't mean to be rude or anything.
