Yep, only a yank would think that a New Yorker of Italian descent has an Italian accent!

I have been to Italy many times, from Lake Como to south of Naples, and as far east as Venice, and I have never heard anyone who sounds like they belong on The Sopranos!

Meanwhile, my wife is from Virginia, and has an accent to die for .... Now if she had a Boston or New York whine that would be a whole different matter!
Maybe this topic is exhausted now and should be laid to rest. I would like to say though that I would much prefer EVERY single accent on the entire North American Continent to ONE certain British accent. I won't say which one in case any of friends in here still speak that way! Maybe in a few years' time I will be speaking with a sort of neutral mid Atlantic accent which I think is quite cool....like Loyd "David it's over to you!" Grossman. I believe he is a Bostonian which I think has its own accent, does it?

Cheers everyone

After having lunch with an American colleague and a female friend from the UK yesterday, the American said "I thought she was pretty hot, until she opened her mouth". He said british accents may work for the men trying to pick up American girls, but the accent has the opposite effect when coming from a woman. To him, the accent is actually repellent

I have actually heard this a few times before - I have been told that British women sound either too gutteral or too shrill to American ears. I have never noticed. Has anyone else come across this?

Hey this is really weird......to me the American accent sounds much better coming from a male. From the few US girls I have met mainly at uni or those I have heard on TV their accents sound to me the same way as the US guy felt about the British female accents....shrill and they talk too fast and seem to swallow their words. Not attractive however lovely the girl looks..in fact it's horrible. And older American women sound croaky. Sorry, but you did ask. I think the American accent sounds much nicer in men. To be fair, some British accents do sound guttural but there are so many accents in such a small island. Not everyone in the UK speaks English either...go to parts of Wales for example and it's like being in a foreign country! The same in Western Isles of my own country Scotland, with Gaelic. Whatever! I'd hate us all to be the same!

Cheers

Personally I love a man with an American accent and one in particular - my husband. The first time we spoke on the telephone my legs went to jelly. He said that my British accent had the same effect on him.

I have been here 6 months and almost every day I get at least one person telling me they love my accent - both men and women but men are always complimenting me on my accent.

Dunno, I'm Irish. All I ever get is "I LOVE your accent".

So basically girls should start talking like men... that would be more attractive! I will try it and see if it works, hehe

My husband's threatened deportation and divorce if I ever get an American accent.
