Not only does the ban come into effect next year in Scotland, but they are also upping the legal age to buy fags to 18 there. Great news.

Obesity? Eating mad cows? Getting drunk?
Was reading this on the Beeb recently- apparently if you put on a lot of weight through giving up smoking you negate the benefits of giving it up.

The risk of developing Type 2 diabetes as a result of obesity is approximately 1/3, I believe.
At this point, the risks of having eaten BSE infected meat are (AFAIK) not fully determined, but so far very few people have died from KJ disease contracted as a result.
Getting drunk - rarely a good idea, but unless it's chronic or you do it in unsafe circumstances, unlikely to harm you seriously.
Smoking, OTOH, increases risk of heart attack by two to six times, risk of stroke by three times, risk of gangrene by more than five times.
Plus it also harms those around people who smoke - viz. passive smoking.
Plus it's a bloody filthy habit...
Elvira (ex-smoker - it's been 21 years!)
PS: Sorry for preaching!
PPS: Now how do I get my son to stop? What an idiot!!!

I personally think being fat or drinking to excess is far more unhealthy than smoking in moderation, but I aint arguing about it. I do agree with the smoking ban in public places, especially aircraft!

Re: Britain - no smoking - 2007
The only thing I have to add is that I recently visited the UK. I was in Birmingham, London, Belfast and Dublin, Eire. Belfast pubs were the smokiest by far. I met up with my BIL one Saturday afternoon for a drink and went to a really smokey pub. I could not help notice a 2 year old toddler running around since I have a 20 month old son myself, the poor little kid was playing in a heavily smokey atmosphere while Mom and her friend were drinking the afternoon away. I really felt sorry for the little tot.
Brum and London pubs were not very smokey while Dublin is smoke free.

I'm with you there. Most americans seem to have no concept of simply not answering the phone, let alone thinking about turning it off!
