Brit in LA
Hey guys!
Sorry I think my message was interpreted in the wrong way.. I'll change..
My name is Nia , new to the British expats community. Im from London and have been in the states 2 years. I got married to my husband last April and its been a lengthy green card process, nearly ready to file.
Does anyone have any helpful advice or contacts on working or finding jobs / volunteering ?
I have a vast amount of corporate experience and a business graduate.
Thanks
Nia

I think the best advice that any of us could give you would be to not advertise the fact that you are working illegally while you are still in a somewhat precarious position.

Re: Brit in LA
So working "cash in hand", are you paying income tax and social security deductions at the moment, or you only breaking immigration law by working without a visa/ work authorization?

Re: Brit in LA
So the question better phrased is can you work or do anything while waiting for your SSN?

Re: Brit in LA
BTW you don't actually need an SSN to start working, though an employer might ask if you have applied for one. I actually started work myself, at a large corporation, without having an SSN at the time, but that didn't stop me starting work and being put on the HR system.

Also...Don't know what your position is on the issue - but this would certainly be worthwhile/vitally important volunteer work, if you're so inclined:

Re: Brit in LA
My wife volunteered at a Humane Soceity - larger ones have full Boards, senior exec roles etc. It doesn't have to just be mucking out the dogs. As others have stated, needs to be true volunteering.
