We often buy from the Mennonites, and theirs has no preservatives nor HCFS in it.

Like others, I use a breadmaker for most of our bread (we seem to eat a lot less here..?) but I don't actually like my own homemade for sandwiches, so if we're going to be in for a lot of sandwiches (picnic/camping/hiking/whatever) I buy Orowheat - either the whole grain or 9 grain. Its pretty reasonable, but I couldn't say whether it has sugar in it or not, but it must have a ton of preservatives as it lasts a scarily long time....

I'm in my 7th year here now, and I'll never get used to the bread!
The only bread I've liked has been Walmart's own brand whole wheat bread.
Other whole wheat breads are still sweet, bur, for some reason, the cheapo Walmart brand seems fine!
White bread, rolls etc are fine with jam or peanut butter....but too sweet for anything else.
I still can't get used to this sweet/savory mix with everything here....maple syrup on meat, honey glazed everything.....!!!
Ohhhh..... and cheese..... don't start me off on American cheese!!!!

Decent tasting, quality bread. The Baggio italian bread is very similiar to UK bread. Not sweet at all. I don't buy the Sunflower Raisin because I can't eat just one slice...
Hearty and tasty wholegrain bread and my family generally won't touch the 'healthy' stuff!

Saw someone mention Orowheat in a post, our local hostess store would practically give away full bins of bread to folks with livestock/chickens. The bags were slashed so they couldnt be resold and the Orowheat loaves lasted nearly 3 months before they started to go mouldy. Looking at the packaging they are loaded with preservatives and additives, normal bread does not have 21 ingredients !!!

Your "3 months" equals my "scarily long time"
I knew it was long, but not quite how long. That really is scarey, isn't it.....

I half-saw a news item last week about the boss of one of the supermarket chains (can't remember which) wanting to start a new line of stores selling out of date food at seriously reduced prices. He reckoned there were billions of dollars of food wasted every year that was past the sell by/ best by date, but still edible. I'm sure there'd be a market for it, but wonder how they cover themselves liability wise. I volunteer with a local food bank, and they get some scartch and dent stuff from the supermarkets, but they can't get any out of date merchandise, even if it is still edible, and it all goes to waste. Kind of ironic, given how slow some of the supermarkets are at taking out of date stuff off the shelves...

What a waste of good chocolate ..... and a waste of bacon (note, not "good" bacon - I'm assuming it's American bacon.
)

Look on YOUTUBE for Mark Bitman "NO KNEAD BREAD" and also "Artisan Bread in 5 Minutes a Day". These are easy procedures for making your own bread. Enjoy.
