Default Blair 'failed to influence Bush'

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/6190909.stm

The 2003 invasion and the post-war "debacle" have damaged Britain's international influence, said the Chatham House report.

"Blair has learned the hard way that loyalty in international politics counts for nothing," said Professor Bulmer-Thomas.

"And his successor will not make the same mistake of offering unconditional support for US initiatives in foreign policy at the expense of a more positive relationship with Europe

So will it make a difference? will his successor put two fingers up to the US?

Britain was clandestinely plundered by the US under the guise of the lend lease agreement and have been towing the line ever since. So the answer is no

No chance of that - like it or not, when it comes to defence issues (and probably trade and a lot of other stuff), we are dependant on good relations with the US.

Heh heh too true!

Well hopefully Tony's successor will be just a tad more cautious... but it's doubtful, unfortunately.

If you or any friends are 'Euro skeptics' might I suggest a good book? 'The United States of Europe' by T.R.Reid will explain the beginnings of the EEC later the EU and it's purpose and vision. Reid is a columnist for the Denver Post/ Rocky Mtn News and spent 6 years in London as a correspondent for the NY Times or Washington Post ( I think). Reid shares his experiences there and his own skepticism about the EU which began to change slowly after his children had some health issues whilst in London. He ends up as a big admirer of the EU in effect saying "watch out USA, the EU is for real". It's a good read and somewhat amusing in parts also.
