If any of you expats or spouses have teenagers would you mind asking them what they would deem as a *suitable gift for a 16 year old?* (No - before some smart Alec suggests it, he can't have any sex, drugs or rock'n'roll - well if he does I don't want to know about it LOL ).

He seems to have too much stuff already if you ask me. He had an Ipod for Xmas last year but rarely uses it. He has a laptop, a bike and a snowboard. He's not into playing musical instruments and I can't get him to read any books Maybe he could do with a new watch - I think he must have lost his last one. I don't know what teenagers prefer to have - he won't want eg. a Timex from Walgreens and he's not getting a Tag Heuer or expensive Swiss watch. About 5 years ago he had a G-Shock but I don't know whatever happened to it.

I'd love it if he chose to have a charity donation in his name instead of gifts....but hell, that's not going to happen.

I haven't a clue.

Thank God the boys don't have 'Sweet Sixteen' parties.

Well I sympathise, Englishmum. Having acquired a 17-year old stepson last year (I raised two girls) I had no clue what to get for him. However, he has appreciated Playstation 2 games of various kinds - car racing, football, golf, war games etc. He also enjoys rap music so some CDs were OK - he had to tell me which "artists" to go for

He also likes model car racing (remote control) so that and/or accessories for it were good.

Fossil is a place the boys seem to like. We bought him a Fossil Superman watch which he really likes.

And now we have his birthday and Christmas coming up so we have to go through all of that again!

You do want to look into the flying lessons idea. Not sure where you are in NJ, but there are a couple of great schools at Morristown ariport.

That's a great idea about the flying lessons...I might save that idea for Christmas actually! (He is so desperate to drive that I think I'm going to book some driving lessons for his 16th).

Actually we are very close to Morristown airport, I live just off Rt 78 and Routes 24 & 124 in Short Hills, so Morristown airport is about 15 minutes away.

He was once a very lucky young boy; I was flying to London with him once on Royal Brunei and the pilot was bored. He came down to the cabin and had a chat with me and we were invited to spend some time in the cockpit. I returned to my seat and my son was allowed to stay in the cockpit when it came in to land in Dubai! That will never happen again of course.

Well its 5/10 mins down the 24. Try "Century" I went there and know first hand that they are a very well run safe school.
Good luck.

By the way you are two mins from me.

When my boys were nearing 16- the first one told me ALL his friends were getting a car for their 16th's- that was one American tradition I had no intention of adopting.. so we gave him a cheque to start off a car account and his Dad got him a Summer job to earn and save for his own car. He worked full time all Summer, saved every penny and I'll never forget the look on his face when he finally bought a car.
His younger brother wanted a deep sea fishing trip and deep sea diving lessons for his 16th.
