A comprehensive cctv system removed my civil liberties but facilitated the conviction of the horrendous crime of an addict nicking a bag of sweets from a shop. Where's the balance here?

Noble thoughts FB but King Canute comes to my mind when reading the above.

You don't really stop crime though. You just allow crime by a tiny elite to be perpetrated on the masses instead.

Yes but there is always a snall percent of people that will commit crime regardless of social standing, financial position etc. Look at the amount of Hooray Henry's etc that have been caught shoplifting, doing drugs, stealing etc. Nothing to with poverty or education. Doing something illegal is very much in the human psyche...its the thrill, the sense of going against the system and to some people, the sheer joy that comes with commiiting a criminal act. Rape and murder arent always crimes of poverty or finances.

The shit in society was mostly created by society itself. There are a small proportion of people who will commit crime even if they were brought up in a loving environment, live in a nice house, have a pleasant job that they enjoy, and can afford to pursue their pastimes. The vast majority of these people, however, won't.

To nick someone else's analogy: if you don't like mosquitos, don't build swamps.

I agree. But concentrating on these things will reduce it greatly. If you want to stop it completely, let's monitor everybody all the time. I worry about who will monitor the monitors, though! And it's not a world I would particularly want to live in.

Absolutely. And we (they) need all the tools we can use in detecting crime and legally bringing criminals to justice.
