Don't forget Arizona. Gorgeous, open state, with great weather (ok, it gets hot during the summer but not humid). NO natural disasters (except dust storms, which cause traffic to slow down at worst). Winters are a total blast. Cost of living is relatively low and real estate is reasonable as well.
Crime rate is a little high, but then I suspect it might be comparable to CA or FL.
