If you think you need a gun for home security I suggest you live somewhere else a little safer.
On the Hunting side of things; Texas, being TX, has millions of gun ranges etc. Every single one of your neighbours will either be a hunter or know someone who is a hunter. Just ask around when you get here. They will all want to show you their gun collections anyway.

I know what you're thinking. Did he fire six shots or only five? Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement, I've kinda lost track myself. But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya punk?

There are those in Texas who hunt deer, shoot skeet, etc. Typically they own 'long guns' which are kept locked up somewhere and are only brought out to be transported to the deer lease or the skeet range. These are normal, you-and-me kind of people.
Then there are those who are obsessed with personal security and handguns. They have concealed firearm permits and keep handguns under the car seat, in the glove, under their pillows at home, etc. If ever stopped by a peace officer the first words out of their mouths had better be to tell the officer that they're armed, otherwise they're in big trouble.
'Long gun' or recreational shooters are quite the norm in Texas, and no one in Houston will bat an eyelid if you own such a weapon. I don't know what your citizenship / immigration status is, but that will affect what you can buy / own. I think anyone can walk into Walmart and buy a shotgun though, which is a bit scary.
