Yes it is. Which is why I have the FoxyProxy as well - Foxy handles the UK IP (using proxy). I'm using the TOR bundle as my 'hide from the web' tool.

I can send you a link for setup if you want....

yeah, that'll be great, thanks

There anything like that torbutton though that can switch the proxy on and off without having to go to setup?

The last time I liked at a FF proxy plugin was around v1.5

I just use FF for iplayer and other UK specific stuff. You could probably turn of Vidalia and it would non-proxy but I've never tried.

Otherwise I wrestle with IE and all it's foibles.....

I personally find my whirlygig causes a conflict with the wattle-thruster when I splice the FoxyNoxy node through my One-Eyed Pea. Guess I'll just have to go back to the old standby - Rabbit Ears.

I've played around with Foxy Proxy a couple of times and I think it does allow you to switch on/off proxy connection really easily.

The main problem I had was finding a reliable, free and fast proxy server located in the UK. In the end I stopped trying.

I am so with you
My cousin offered to set up a proxy server?? for us as long as we did it for him so he could get Heros early (that all you need to know about him) proxys are illegal, the only one I have heard of that escapes illegality seems to be UK Nova, I have signd up about 3 times and still can't seem to work out what to do
apparently it is a Bit torrent but they are still illegal the only way I feel they get round it is they don't piss off the BBC by showing stuff they are about to show on BBC A or about to do on DVD/bulray?
i heard it hear... I think in the paul and spike show? or spike and paul show??

VPN for me, use Iron as my browser.

At least this way I can listen to the footie for less than I was paying for a subscription service.

1. Using a proxy server is not illegal.
2. UK Nova isn't a proxy server. It's a torrent sharing site.

I've been trying to work out what I want to do (if anything as I'm not really watching much TV lately) but what's better - proxy or VPN? Or will they both work just as effectively for iplayer etc.?

Theoretically, either method will work for what you want to do.

In practice, the bandwidth requirements for streaming good quality video are so onerous that you'll find that you'll struggle. Unless you are willing to pay for a premium service.

Download via TheBox or UKNova is the way to go unless you really need to watch live.

I was thinking of paying. I do use UKNova but the worry is at some point that the ISP will start monitoring that type of activity and cause me issues (as I've heard some do).

I tried the others, gave up and went VPN, not that expensive and you can pay $5 to give it a go.

I'm really happy with just having access to the iplayer. Speed is not an issue and programs look great on my LCD TV.

LiveTV will always be a problem - the best way for that is a slingbox. But you have to have a host TV/cable box at the other end that no-one is using.....

I doubt that BBC would care, BBC America is not the BBC, in fact its a completely separate entity, BBC America Is BBC Worldwide, a commercial company which purchases content from the BBC (and other broadcasters) BBC Worldwide also own part of the channel "Dave", joint venture with Virgin Media.

Its all perfectly possible, in fact the recording, transcoding and file copy can all be automated if you invest in the hardware at the 'head end' (ie; in the UK) which is what I have done, I have both SKY+ and Freeview connected to a MythTV server, which records, transcodes and then copies programming automatically to my Tivo's which are on my local network in the US, UK programming appears 'automagically' on my Tivo's, however you would have to invest in the infrastructure on both ends. Yes I use Slingbox too, however its only really any use for live viewing, as capturing the video doesnt give you anything like a xvid/divx recording, quality wise.
