I've never tried it as I live in the UK still, but a quick Google search found this. My Expat Telly - Watch UK, US, Australian & Canadian TV Online Abroad

smartDNS for telly. VPN is security overload that will slow things down, not needed for telly.

My Friends in florida use uk tv everywhere. They say it's good as it goes straight to your tv. Has anyone else used it?

I did a quick google search and downloaded an addin for chrome (can't remember the name), It allows me to use 4od, iplayer etc. Benefit is it also makes website think you are in the UK good for banking etc.

I've thought about this a few times, gets a few recommendations on twitter from some well known faces. It's $25 a month though isn't it? Compared to $5 a month for my DNS service, I'd rather just plug my iPad into the tv and watch stuff that way. I find I watch less and less UK tv the longer I'm here. Probably couldn't justify the $25 a month right now.

Have a proxy service for the ipad and stream that through the TV. That said, watching a lot less telly than I expected and netflix / amazon prime are also getting a huge amount of watching.
As to BBC not going subscription - I think there's also a pandora's box for them that the moment they show that people are willing to pay X per month for the BBC it becomes a lot easier to argue against the licence fee - and whilst the other broadcasters hate the BBC's "unfair" advantage, the thought of it competing on the free market would be terrifying...
I think that's why we are quietly allowed to do our thing and they keep doing their thing and everyone's happy...

BBC Worldwide in Oz may well be lobbying to protect its revenue stream - but the great British public sector broadcaster has bigger things on its mind...
