You could also apply to do a post-doc here after completing a PhD - it's very easy for those with science PhDs like a PhD in chemistry to get a post-doc on a J1, very easy. Getting the post-doc is the harder bit, but with a PhD in something like chemistry ... pretty easy dude. When I completed my PhD in chemistry, the turn round time for J1s was about 2 weeks or so. But I did not want to do a post-doc in the USA, so didn't apply, but talking to other PhDs who did apply for J1s, it was a 2-week turnaround, but “that was then, and this is now”. So dude, do your own due diligence.
