Yeah! what he said!
Austin is great this time of year, but the summers suck.
To the OP:
Brit foods: bits and pieces everywhere. Anything in particular you would like? I've seen things at the local Indian grocery stores, World Market, certain HEBs, certain Randalls.... etc. My OH is flying to Germany then Holland next week and I'm thinking hard of having food shipped there so he can bring it home to me. I am NOT an expat but I love British food and really could do with some Eccles cakes.
I found a Brit food store in Silly Valley once but my goodness the prices were high. On the other hand, they really did have just about everything!
As you may have noticed there is not quite the same diversity of restaurants/cultures/food stores as in LA, but it's "good enough" IMHO without some of the problems of LA. I've lived here 20 years and there was a huge influx of Californians in the 90s.... some of whom just could not acclimatise and ended up moving back to LA or SF or wherever. But mostly they stayed.... and drove the housing market sky high!
Welcome.

Ulp, thanks. I heard about the summers, humidity ahoy! Then again I also hear , despite it's unpleasantness, that certain levels of Humdity is actually good for you. Makes the lungs work harder.
I hope I end up staying

I know!! Organising our holiday plans ended up being all of a rush. At one stage when we were exploring the city on foot, my blokey even said "is there anyone from that website who lives here that might be interested in a drink?" And then we got distracted and the thought left our mind.
I would have loved to have met you guys!

Wot she said.
I am an expat, but have been here for years. The best authentic all-round curry house in Austin right now (my opinion) is the Bombay Bistro, 183 and Braker. Clay Pit wasn't bad for a while (hell, I was around when it opened), but it's gotten a little complacent of late, although the half-price happy hours are very worthwhile. Ask Bombay Bistro to make you their Lamb Kadhai - not on the menu, but it's great.
Oh, and welcome to Central Texas! The Californians moving here ... that's for another thread!

Wow, holy crap. Small world for sure,Scouse Express! - Ok so I lived in the 'orrible Crete and Candia towers as a student on Scottie road! and went to the Jester pub when we couldnt be arsed to go into town. Yeah I remember North Western Buses, used them alot! Fine mode of transport I was there when they started building the new Gyro(Gyratory Bus station) near Lime St!
In NewBrighton we used to frequent the Hotel Victoria, fantastic beer garden! Elevated high, sat there on a many a warm afternoon nursing pints after pint, you could see the Irish sea and the Seacats go out, some reckoned that they could see Southport on a clear day. Not much of drinker these days. I heard this year they tore down the Hotel Vic!
Another great pub down there was 'The Magazine'. Beer garden's, damn I miss those! My Favorite ones were where the Landlord had kept the grass! Not Concreted it over!
Happy New Year All!

Not only has the Vic gone (incidentally, also where I could be found gazing over the bay) the Albion is also closed and boarded up, too.
I was over in October, and it would seem that Condos (there's a big surprise) are going to be built where the Vic once stood proudly
Magazine is still going strong, but, I made a point of drinking at Rigby's on Dale Street......as they were serving Okell's Bitter (from the IOM for those that don't know).
Jim.
