Wow - so many replies, I'm really impressed!

I'm very grateful for all the info, as it has re-inforced my assumptions about travelling with Greyhound, that they're nothing like National Express! It's a shame as a short 'road trip' by bus in the US could be an interesting experience but I don't relish the idea of being hassled by nutcases or worse, possibly catching TB or something. (The weird thing is, last Summer after fruitlessly trying to book train tickets on Indian railways, we had to take a 15 hour bus journey from Goa to Bombay...now that *was* interesting but the Indians are very friendly and we felt totally safe - none of them were high on drugs).

I've also found this interesting bus travel company which provides rustic holidays called:

http://www.greentortoise.com (seems to be run by hippies).

Actually I've discovered that there is a little airline called "Independence Air" which flies from the 3 NY area airports to Washington Dulles. They're currently having a special fare sale from $44 one way (+ taxes) and operate from a few other destinations (mostly on the Eastern seaboard) as well....might be worth adding them to your 'favourites'

http://www.flyi.com

However, I've just spoken with the daughter and she's now decided she would prefer to just 'chill out' and we're now musing on the idea of heading off somewhere with a tropical beach (!).

Anyone been to Nassau or Bermuda?

Chris,

I work in Dallas for a private aviation company. I'm a pilot, but that's just a hobby, my job there is database manager.

I assume you fly copters?

That's a big switch!

Reminds me of a friend of mine who's a charter operator down in Houston. He used to be a successful lawyer (corp. law), got burned out on it and decided to fly full-time.

p.s. Bell Jet Rangers are pretty. There's one in my hangar right now, about 20 feet from my door

I lived in Nassau for 7 years. I don't recommend it. Poor service, high prices, not much sightseeing to do really, way too hot and humid this time of year. If you love casinos though, go for it.

It's been years since I rode Greyhound, but let me tell you -- every time I hear or read someone mention it, I immediately hear the tune of the song "The Freaks Come Out at Night". If you know what I mean.

FWIW, I definitely recommend DC, because you can spend the entire time you're there going to world-class museums, galleries and monuments and not pay a penny in entrance fees.

Thumbs up Re: Anyone been on a Greyhound Bus?

We've decided to go on a totally relaxing break instead and are just going to chill out on a beach.

Got a fantastic deal last night on http://www.site59.com - and a promotional rate my friend told me about by typing in NYPOST gave a $59 discount.

It's the US counterpart of the UK site Travelselect.com (which was formerly named Lastminute.com).

Off to Aruba for some R&R next week.... 6 nights for the hotel including flights & taxes from Newark for just under $600 each (The airline's websites charge a much higher fare for the flight alone....Continental wanted $900!).
