Any Uk optometrists moved over to the USA?
Hi
My wife is a USC but has lived in the Uk since she was 5, we are starting the DCF process soon but she is worried about a job
She has
1. Degree in Human Biology (Bsc)
2. Masters degree in Optometry (Moptom 4yr course)
3. Masters degree in Forensic Egyptology (Msc)
Problem is she cannot work as an Optometrist in the USA without doing a very expensive 2 year conversion course
We want to relocate to California and I was just wondering if any other optoms went out to the USA and whether they could get any work in the optometric world?
OR, should she just abandon the idea of optometry and try to get a job with one of her other 2 degrees !
Thanks as always

Depends on what she wants to do, I guess...
Keep in mind that she will probably have to find other work first anyway until you qualify as 'locals' (that tends to make a lot of difference in tuition costs, here in NV you have to be a resident for a year before you qualify) and I'd use that time to save enough money to pay the tuition. Oh, and before you even start thinking "student loan", read this, it should hopefully be enough to turn you off that idea for good.

Re: Any Uk optometrists moved over to the USA?
Thanks Tim
hmmm interesting article ! we don't want to get into any big debt to be honest , she would love to stay in Optometry but it looks very difficult
From what we can see the 2 year course is in New England and we want to live in California ! plus it costs a fortune ......
And when qualified we don't think that she will earn bucket loads anyway (well not enough to repay the student fees quickly anyway)
All in all not looking too good really, unless she can work in the field but not as an Optometrist but as something else? Or find another job in a different area?
if only we knew 5 years ago we would want to move across !! hindsight eh ...

Okay, working at an opticians might not be what you're after, but it could be a start?

The ops working at Costco are independants...they just rent the office etc.

Sam's Club depends on the location but I think BJ's aren't contracted.
Either way, there's a few chains who might have some ideas, worth a shout out at least.

Walmart employ ops in some of their stores...some stores rent the space out to companies ie Vision Centre.
