Any suggestions?

I applied for a social security number (based upon my LPR in the US) on the 17th December 2001, since then I still have not received the SS card in the mail.
I got my physical greencard in mid January and I am now at the point of wondering if I should return to the Newburgh NY office and show them my (10) year greencard in furtherance of my application (would it make any difference?).
When I called them up in early January they said that they were awaiting verification from the INS of my residency status (which is odd - my alien number was in the passport, along with the admission and I-551 stamp, the lady scribbled it down on the bottom of the SS-5 form). I don't see what the hold up is, I was of the understanding that they enter my alien number into their system and it returns my status then and there.
Also, I called the main SS number (the 1-800 one) and the details are on their system too, but no number has been allocated yet!
Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do?
Thanks,
PriZm.
FWIW – I entered the USA on Dec 14th (Friday)

Ahh lovely Newburgh. Jim and I were up there for lunch the weekend before last. Nice area and nicer drive up 9W.
I would suggest you go back to the SS office and see what's give with them. Or perhaps Mr. Young of the SSA might have a suggestion that would be better suited to expediant service.

I particularly like the cultural diversity of Broadway, and the relaxing drives around Newburghs (plenty!) one way streets to find a parking space at the SSA.
It must be said, there is a comparable relaxing drive on Rt 211 thru Middletown.
Bear Mountains got nuthin' on Newburgh =)

Only used Route 17 through Middletown on the way to Elmira. But will try it one day. Thanks.
My grandparents were originally from the Beacon/Haverstraw area and I was just reading of the massive turnaround planned for Haverstraw during the next two years. Those long negligented brickmaking towns were once very populated and have fallen by the wayside over the decades. Nice to see the Hudson Valley coming alive again.

I would give it a try. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Alvena
