American gal....for now?

Re: American gal....for now?
Hi Colette,
I love the UK and its culture. I do have trouble with the winter weather in Northern Europe because I was raised and have lived in a hot, sunny climate far nearer the equator than anywhere in the UK.
Go in summer and you can fall head over heels in love.... go in winter and you might be (and I stress *might*) yearning for the sun after a few days or a week. It's also very humid compared to the desert, so.... only you will know how you'd do with the weather. In August with our normal heat having returned, being cold sounds nice, but it's the greyness of English skies that can get to me.
Other than that I am still in love with the UK. My favourite parts are in England, in the West Country (especially Somerset proper) and Derbyshire.
I'm American, my husband is Dutch (we met here, long story) and I'd have the same weather/climate issues in the Netherlands, so I'm not picking on the UK! But the cold damp really makes me aware that I have some degree of arthritis at just-turned-40.
I fully intend to try to live in Europe in the future and if you've got the chance, I'd say take it!

I had a quick look at their homesickness threads. I don't recognise the US they describe and I found myself shouting at the computer screen.
Half the stuff they miss is available in the UK.

You should read the 'making friends' posts--it is almost IDENTICAL to the threads here.

But I was thinking about the OP's original question earlier today. If there is ANY way you can go for an extended trip, say 3 or 4 weeks, just to get a taste of things BEFORE you up and move I think it would be very helpful. You might come back and be packing boxes as soon as you get home, or you migth come home and say 'well, I'm going to be giving up this and that and I didn't like those things.' A little more first-hand recon on what you are about to experience would really be helpful.
