Moved to the US in January. Both myself and my partner have UK amex cards and applied online for US cards. The US online application doesn't seem to let you put in a UK card number so after we applied online we had to call the global card transfer desk. After giving them our UK card numbers, the applications were instantly approved. Could not be easier really.
We did use SSNs but not sure if it is needed. I did need to provide proof of my US address.
The direct number for the global transfer desk is (866) 929 5160.
Does anyone know of any other financial institutions in the US provide a similar service?

HSBC will sort you out with credit cards and bank accounts etc before you arrive in the USA. They need about 2-3 weeks' notice and will do this even if you haven't had an account before.

What's the best way of contacting HSBC? US phone or can you do the application online from the UK?

No, and I didn't say it was! I was responding to the OP's reference to SSNs. SSN is required to begin building a credit history.

I just applied and got approved for an AmEx through the global transfer team!
Applied on line and got a request for my latest tax return.
Called the CS hotline and eventually get put through to global transfer however they said they couldn't approve it as there had not been any purchases or payments on my UK card in the last 6 months (likely closer to two years!).
I made a $5.99 kindle book purchase and then paid it off a couple of days later.
Called the global transfer team back and they instantly approved my US card (Platinum as I will get my money's worth).
No agreed limit but told to call them if I'm going to make any large purchases (they said $2k+).
All very easy in the end!
Now to start building my credit score!!!

I can tell you I had a very good rating in the UK, and I put $13k (in a single month) on the card within 6 months. I've paid about $40k on it since August. I just use the app to "check spending power"

I currently have a Virgin Atlantic Credit Card which come with both a VISA and an American Express, I have had a sole AMEX in the past (but this card is now closed). I assume this needs to be a sole AMEX as opposed to one provided through a 3rd party (in my case Virgin Atlantic) in order for the card transfer and therefore credit rating to work?
Or, since I don't leave for another 6weeks yet, is it worth opening an AMEX now and then doing the global transfer that way?

I'd apply for a proper Amex now before leaving the UK, then you'll be eligible in a few months.
Incidentally your credit profile doesn't transfer to the US, all they do is use your UK card as a reference to open a card here without any local history.

Hi. Is there a way of applying for a US card before moving? I’ve got my new apartment lined up but the leasing manager has already told me that I can’t have any mail directed there before I move. I’m keen to get the card before I leave the uk. I’ll be spending heavily as soon as I arrive (buying furniture etc) and don’t want to load a Uk card with a lot of foreign exchange fees.

Do you have an UK Amex?
If so then may be worth calling the Global Transfer team and talking to them. I expect you’d need a US bank account too.
Alternatively get a U.K. credit card that does not charge fees. I have been using a Barclaycard up until I got the US Amex.

The Halifax Clarity credit card is excellent for using abroad, best possible exchange rate and no fees, even at ATMs
