Am I Australian !!!

Oh bollocks. I owe you an apology. I confess I did not read the thread fully first, and when I found the hour or so required to do so I became rather sickened, both by the very stereotypical anti British behavior and by the fact that I had been suckered into posting something that indicated that I in some way supported those comments.
I apologise unreservedly.
As for not loving my country. I appreciate that defending someone who had made disparaging comments about Blighty would make it look that way, please accept the fact that I did not appreciate that when I posted.
Bugger!!
For the record I am as patriotic as the next guy when it comes to the UK. I served 11 years as an Officer in the British Army, and got shot at several times by the Irish who someone pointed out were funded by noraid.
I apologise unreservedly.

Don't feel too bad about yourself, unfortunately Ranjini seems to bring out the worst in people and positively delight in stirring up trouble. Actually until she decided to post, this thread was at best amusing and at worst a bit of a grumble at the Americans. After that all hell broke loose and I have seen normally very intelligent posters saying things that they usually do not (myself included) on this forum.
She managed to annoy me into posting whan angry and feeling very silly when I had calmed down. I'm sure on another thread your postings will be fine, but this thread has turned into a bit of a nightmare for all concerned, I fear.

Ok, I went back and read the entire thread also.
My overview is that Ranjini is just defending her new homeland. I don't believe that she dislikes British people or Britain per se. My "awful" British mother went to Sri Lanka a couple of years go and found the Sri Lankan people to be wonderful, friendly and actually rather endeared of the British, no hard feelings there.
Dr Scrumpy - you are proud of being British, there's nothing wrong in that. Some uncalled for comments IMHO but that's life.
I've met arrogant, ignorant people in both the US and UK, I didn't write them off as a waste of space because of it. I'm arrogant and ignorant myself on occasion..lol I try to look for the good in people wherever I am.
Perhaps if we share our experiences we can enlighten both those who will listen and ourselves by listening?
Exchanging insults never was a good way to encourage people to forgo bigotry and predjudice in my experience.
I'm Irish, I love Ireland but I also love the US. My national identity is not what is most important to me or what is important at all to me in anyone else.
I am myself and that is all I expect of anyone else or have a perception of them as. All countries have bigots - do we have to add to their numbers by voluntarily numbering ourselves amongst them?
We all live in glass houses, let's not throw stones.....

But like someone said somewhere, I'm no sycophant either. Make no bones about my views.I'm out of here before someone jumps into say I've made more comebacks than Sinatra. No hard feelings, really
As always, nice interacting with you Laird

It's easier to recognise the Oxbridge type of accent which is what most Americans relate to. The regional accents are more difficult to place, IMHO. We all enjoy Nicole Kidman and Russel Crowe. And that's how we think the Aussies speak....

How many Brits now living or visiting the USA get the ‘are you Australian’ responses when conversing. I was actually told in McDonalds after giving my order that I sounded just like the Crocodile Hunter.
I would estimate that when my accent is mentioned that in 80% of the times I get either ‘are you Australian’ or ‘where in Australia do you come from’ ARGHHHHHHHHHH. And to cap it all a crowd of us went to our local Outback Steak House, and I was asked to read the menu with my Australian accent by the guy on the next table, much to the amusement of everybody, every five minutes he kept shouting ‘Gooday Mate’ followed by a huge laugh. Mind you he didn’t find it so damn funny after I rammed the ‘Blooming Onion’ up his arse.
Is it just me ?. I have no Australian roots although my mothers descendants are French (look it wasn’t my choice they just are ok). My daughter is back packing in Oz for a year and she sent me a few postcards so maybe that’s it !!!
