Re: Alternative to Toyota Corolla
I wouldn't recommend a Focus. Bought a brand new 2013 Focus in January last year and it's been nothing but trouble - mainly due to the dual clutch transmission - had to have the entire transmission replaced within six months of purchase. Not what I was wanting from a brand new car! Seems like a lot of other owners have experienced similar problems also.

Like I said, the Ford Powertrain transmissions are junk. Porsche and Aston Martin's have dual clutch transmissions. Ford Focuses? Er, no.

Loads of GTI's in New England, owning one is a much cheaper affair than in England I've realised. I've yet to see an ST. Do they even come with a floppy padel option like the DSG GTI? I expect the manual version puts people off?

[Edit] Actually, on reflection, I'm not sure... The Speed 3 was Standard only.. I THINK the ST was also.... It's a while since I was looking.

I've got a GTI DSG. I test drove the ST. The torque steer was bad, but other than that the handling was decent. The car was better than I thought it would be.

Sigh, I knew I shouldn't have commented on a thread about cars.... for the record both Ford Head Office and my local Ford dealer seem to think my Focus has a DCT or their version of it - either way, it's not very good.

Well, your Focus *does* have a dual clutch transmission. That's an indisputable mechanical fact. The main differences between the Ford Powertrain and, for example, Porsche's DSG is one is wet (Porsche) the other is dry. One doesn't attempt to put you into the lowest gear at every damn opportunity (Porsche) whilst the other is constantly all over the place in revs because the transmission is programmed to be as economical as possible.
