About taking pets to the US.

I'm moving in 3 years time and although I know it's a long time off my hamsters actually could live 4 1/2 years so I'm curious. Can you take hamsters/gerbils etc abroad with you when you move? What quarenteen checks do they have to have and how long are you seperated from them? You probably think I'm crazy but rehoming hamsters in this economy would prove to be quite difficult and I don't want to give them up if I can help it.
Thanks.

The US doesn't automatically quarantine animals like the UK does. As long as the animal isn't prohibited and the shots are up to date, it's not a problem.

Check out:

Rabbits, Guinea pigs, hamsters, ferrets, and other
pet rodents:
There are no CDC or USFWS restrictions or requirements
on these animals if brought in as pets.

You'll want to check with the airline before booking the ticket.

mad yes...impossible probably, you could always slip them inside your bag and hope nobody finds them! To be honest, I have never heard of anyone bringing rodents into the US, it could possibly be illegal:confused:
Try googling it, you may get more help.

Yes, quite mad. "Quarenteen" sounds nasty.

Thanks.

We recycled our Guinea Pigs on freecycle. Someone wanted a run, said she could have ours with 2 GP's in. Unfortunately, hubby told her they were 2 boys but in fact were 2 girls, honest mistake my daughter had insisted on calling them Hansel and Gretal and he couldn't remember what sex they were. Guess she will have lots to recycle herself now.

AFAIK, dogs and cats are the only pets allowed in cabin, so your hamsters would have to travel in the hold. You might want to talk to a specialist pet transportation company, several have been mentioned in similar threads.

I remember someone brnging over a chipmunk; she had a little carrier and had it in the cabin with her.

Every airline seems to be different, but most have all the info on their websites.

If no airline will take them then maybe try taking boat.

I had 2 Siberian hamsters (one of which had 9 babies) they both lives to 10 years old, i kept two of the babies they both lives to 6 years old. Depending on breed they can live for a while.

The smaller dwarf/Russian breeds live a shorter life span while, Siberians can live to 10 years of age

Maybe the chipmunk was a certified therapy animal. :)

You are decidedly not crazy, you are a responsible pet owner, good on you.
